Captain Marvel | Before
I have not seen Captain Marvel yet, so I decided to do a part on it to explain how I've felt about the movie for a long time now. I'll write another one after I actually see it, which will be tomorrow. I just wanted to be able to capture how I was feeling about it and specifically Carol, before my opinion had the possibility to be changed, so that I could contrast it with my opinion after I watch it.
The only thing I'm going to ask y'all to do is read 'til the end before you jump down my throat, because I am going to try to explain myself so that you know what I'm actually saying. And remember that this is my pre-viewing opinion. I'm not that worried about spoilers for this one, since I just don't care and everyone knows she's gonna survive and stuff, but I just don't want to get shoved with a full summary of the movie and all the reasons why it proves me wrong. If that's true, then I'll see I'm proved wrong when I see the movie for myself. I don't need you to describe it to me. If you still think I'm wrong based on the information I have and the explanation I give, feel free to yell at me... I really don't care.
Anyway, here we go.
In short? As of right now, I pretty much hate Carol Danvers. Hear me out; I have a list of reasons.
First, everyone is going crazy because she's finally a strong female character that has her own movie. I do understand that she has her own movie and that's a first for Marvel. That's cool, I guess. But I just don't see what's so new about strong female characters in the MCU. Honestly, I feel like everyone is completely disregarding all of the awesome ladies we already have. And that's what ticks me off.
Let's start with the obvious. Um... Natasha Romanoff, anyone? Come on, she is the toughest girl on the block, and she was an original Avenger. No, she has never had her own movie. But first off, there's rumors that we're finally getting one. And second, she doesn't need one. She steals the show no matter what she does. I'm not saying she's just meant to be a supporting character. I'm saying she's a badass lady who walks in and runs whatever movie she's in. I've heard people say that Marvel tried so hard to make her tough that that's all they made her, but to be honest, if you think that, you've just got a thing against the girl and aren't paying good enough attention. I don't want to get into it, but seriously, if you watch the movies without a bias against Nat, she's a really deep character. She's been there since the beginning, and I just hate that everyone seems to be so used to her that they ignore the awesome woman the MCU gave us at the very start.
Next up, we have Peggy Carter. That woman is the toughest and yet the deepest girl we could possibly ask for. For me personally, she is an absolute hero. One, I've always loved WWII woman, and she's the best of the best. And two, the way she disregards what people think of her, keeps moving even when no one believes in her, is super inspiring on super personal level due to things that have happened in my life. And what about the quote Sharon reads at Peggy's funeral? You know, the one that gave Steve the final push towards what he knew he needed to do? Yeah, just that little thing. Oh. My. God. I love that quote. It's become one of my life-mottos, one of those things I remember just when I need that push, just like Steve did. Plus, the woman literally founded SHIELD. Has Peggy ever had a movie? No. But she is far more than just a love interest. She was sometimes Steve's only supporter in The First Avenger. That was something that went way deeper than their romance. And then she got a one-shot and her own tv-show. I've never seen the one-shot, and only saw bits and pieces of the show, which I've heard mixed reviews on. I plan to go back and watch both whenever I have the chance. So, no, I don't know how good either was, but I know they were there... Marvel tried. They knew how much we adored Peggy, and they tried to deliver. Steve was on ice at that point. They were making content about Peggy because she is a goddess and deserves it. So when people go crazy about Carol being the first female character to get her own movie in the MCU, I just hate that they're forgetting about so much.
