But Mr Park takes a quick scan of the piece of paper before sighing, closing the book and banging it on the table with a loud boom. "You know what, forget about that," he says. He then stands up, walks around the table before leaning on it.
Mr Park crosses his arms across his chest before squinting his eyes at us. "Head count starting from Naeun, go!"
I watch as Naeun says the word "one", and the boy next to her say "two" and all of our heads follow to the person who would say the next number next.
My number is thirteen and so when it's my turn, I say the number loud and clear before turning my head to the girl sitting next to me as she calls out the number "fourteen."
The counting stops at number twenty-three and we turn back to look at Mr Park.
"Twenty-three?" he asks, "who are the other two that are missing?"
A girl raises her hand.
"Yes?"
"Seohwa, sir," she says.
"And the other?"
There's a small silence engulfing us all, in an almost suffocating way and I don't know why.
Finally, Kim Woojin raises his hand and all eyes are on him.
"Bang Chan, sir," he says in a quiet voice.
"No, Chan is here," I call out in protest.
What I said made the whole class chorus a confused sound, as if what I said didn't make any sense.
Mr Park then smacks his forehead as if he's finally remembered something he's forgotten. "Ah, that's right."
"Chaemin, do you need water?" he then asks, "I have a couple of unopened bottles of water if you want any, you seem to be out of focus."
Groaning, I've had enough. "What is everyone with offering me water? I'm fine, I'm not out of focus, this is just a regular Monday! And Chan, I saw him this morning, I saw him just then! Right, Chan?"
When I hear no response, I start to worry. My brows furrow when I whip my head to face the back of the class. "Chan?"
Woojin's right. Chan is nowhere to be found.
