The first week back at Hogwarts was quite crazy. Between making sure all my classes were in order, to catching up with friends, I barely had a moment of free time. The few free moments I did have were spent showing Bian around the school. Draco hadn't tried anything with her, thankfully, but I was still weary around him.
With the busyness of everyone around me, I hadn't seen Fred much, and the few times I did see him, he either ignored me or quickly waved and walked away. I tried not to think too much about it, but it hurt a bit. I couldn't understand why he was acting so strange.
The night before classes were to officially start, Bian decided to spend some time with her dad, my brother, Hermione, and Ron were off doing who knows what, Neville, Seamus, and Dean were debating topics I truly didn't care about, and my boyfriend was nowhere to be seen. I decided I would find him and try to spend a little time with him before classes kept us apart.
As I wondered the halls, a few students said hi to me, and I of course said hi back. I recognized some of them, but there were more that I unfortunately did not know. There was a surprising amount of people out and about, but I continued my search, hoping to find Fred in one of his usual hangouts.
I all but gave up, until I got towards the library and heard some arguing going on. I picked up my pace and walked closer, curious as to who might be making all that noise. As I peeked my head into one of the windows next to the doors, I saw Malfoy, Fred, and a few other students. I was confused, but began to listen in.
"WHAT THE BLOODY HELL IS YOUR PROBLEM WEASLEY!? Cheating on Potter with a filthy whore of a Slytherin!? CHEATING on her is bad enough, but with someone from the house you claim to loathe?? Honestly WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT??"
I felt my jaw drop and a tear escape despite my best attempts at holding it back. I was shocked not only at the comment, but by the fact that Malfoy was defending me. Fred had cheated on me and here was my mortal enemy defending me. I let the shock pass and continued to listen to their yelling.
"IT WAS ONE BLOODY MISTAKE MALFOY! I DIDN'T MEAN FOR IT TO HAPPEN. SHE WAS THERE, HARLEY WASN'T. I know that isn't an excuse, but shit happens, okay. I know that makes me sound like a complete douche but I have already beat myself up enough about it and I DON'T NEED YOU TO LOOK DOWN ON ME. AND WHAT DOES IT MATTER TO YOU? YOU HATE HARLEY MORE THAN ANYONE!"
Draco got quiet and looked down. Everyone in the library seemed to hold their breath, waiting to see what would transpire next. Fred crossed his arms and waited for his answer.
"Harley deserves better than you; hell, better than anyone at this school. She's going to do incredible things, just you wait. And you're wrong Fred. I hate myself more than I could ever hate Harley."
With that, Malfoy ran out of the library, right past me, without a second glance. Fred sunk against the bookshelves and buried his head in his hands. I stood in the doorway, contemplating what to do next. Unsure of my next move. I took a deep breath, I composed myself, and I walked in to where he was sitting. He looked up at me, and I saw tears running down his face. I kept my face emotionless as I stared down at the boy who had claimed to be in love with me.
"I'm sorry Har... I don't deserve you."
Before I could say anything, he took off running back towards the common room and I groaned before punching the wall. A girl from Ravenclaw put her hand on my shoulder and offered a weak smile. I groaned and shook her hand off me, before walking out of the library.
"He's not worthy of you Potter, wouldn't waste your anger on him."
Malfoy's voice came from behind me and I growled before turning to face him. The smug expression he wore on his face daily, was back as he smirked down at me.
"WHY THE HELL DID YOU DEFEND ME IN THERE YOU FERRET!? WHAT GAME ARE YOU PLAYING BECAUSE I CA-"
I was cut off as he threw his hand over my mouth. The pure shock shut me up, but I continued to glare at him.
"Just face the facts Potter, it thrilled you to hear me say nice things about you. You obviously like me, no need to deny it, it is just the two of us."
He winked at me and I felt my face grow warm in anger and embarrassment. I let out a yell, flicked him off, and turned to stomp away. All that circled my mind the whole way back to my room was his annoying laughter and the smug look on his face when he knew he'd gotten under my skin.
