I come inside from watering the garden and I am instantly thrown to the floor by Vernon. I groan as I look up at him, wondering what I did wrong this time.

He pulls me up by my hair and I cry out as I stand quickly and follow where he is leading me. The kitchen. I am thrown through the door and then kicked in the side by a pointy shoe.

I wince as I look up at Petunia to see her glaring at me. "Just like your pathetic mother, useless! Did I give you permission to drink the water meant for my roses? No!" She screams as she kicks me again.

I groan. Of course I drank from the bin but that is because I haven't had a drink of water since yesterday morning. Then again, it was also from the water bin for the flowers... But oh well!

"Leave her alone!" I hear and look up to see Harry standing in the doorway looking at me in horror.

I shake my head at him. "Harry.... It's fine. It's my fault." I say as I try to not wince from the pain in my side from Petunia's fancy, pointy shoe.

Harry glared at Petunia and Vernon and then came up to me to help me up but Vernon grabbed me first and pulled me up roughly by my hair. I cried out again and Harry took several steps back. "Don't hurt her." He glared. Vernon threw me to the side like a rag doll and I coughed as the air was knocked out of me. Literally.

Harry ran up to me and helped me up, one of my arms slinged across his shoulders. "I better not catch you doing that again, freak." Petunia snarled at me and I rolled my eyes, used to the insults by now.

He helped me down the basement stairs and laid me on my 'bed'. Most homes in the UK don't have basements like this one, but they had it installed so they would have somewhere to put me after me and Harry got too big for the cupboard. He sat down next to me and embraced me in a side hug. I leaned into him as I lay my head on his shoulder. "When can we leave?" I ask quietly and he sighs.

"You know we can't do that. How would we survive out there on our own?" He asks sadly.

"We could make it, you know. Defend each other and fight for each other. It doesn't have to be like this. We can leave." I say with hope welling inside me.

Harry quickly shuts me down. "And where would we go? The streets?" He asks.

"Well...yeah..." I say confusedly. 'Where else?'

Harry shakes his head. "No. Someone would find us and put us in the orphanage and that is worse than being here."

I scoff. "Nothing is worse than being here." I grumble as I curl up tightly as Harry holds me tightly.

He sighs. "I know. But we can't leave. At least we have a place to stay. Just for now. When we get older, then we can leave. Together."

"Together." I sigh. He then left so I could rest and fell asleep almost instantly.

I wake up in my cot in the basement to something scurrying across my face. I open my eyes to see a black mouse sitting on my cheek. I pick up the fur ball and sit up but wince in pain from yesterday.

I gently place him on my lap. "Hey you. What did you get this time?" I ask the little mouse.
