As I looked into the beautiful blue-green sea, watching the waves moving dynamically back and forth, I felt the wind blowing in my hair and I remembered all the good times I had here when I was little.

The first time I came here, was the first time I met Dane.
Then I remembered everything she's done for me, and the sacrifices she's made. I wish I could tell her how much I really love her.

But until this day, she still doesn't know my true feelings. I've never had the courage to tell her... I sighed heavily, and looked up into the sky.

I started thinking of her again, "Melanie..." I said softly. Just the sound of her name makes me want to cry. I grabbed my necklace and held it tight as I closed my eyes, a tear slowly fell from my cheek.

"Hey Jessica, sorry I'm late, the line was long," a voice said behind me.
I turned around and saw Dane holding two large slushies.
Her smile faded as she asked what was wrong. "Oh, nothing, I just got sand in my eye," I said, wiping away my tears and rubbing my eyes softly.

"We'll be careful next time," she said handing me a slushy. "Thanks," I replied, lightly smiling.

It's your favourite flavor, grape fruit," she said.

You still remember?" I responded, giggling.

How can I not? You kept bragging on about it when we were little," she laughed.

"C'mon, let's go take one last walk along the beach before it's too late," I said, walking off toward the sand.

As we walked along the beach, the soft, beige sand between my toes, I looked into the sunset and began to remember more memories. "I remember, we used to do this when we were little, and we would always hold hands..." I said quietly.

Then suddenly Dane grabbed my hand, "It's not too late for that, right?" she said, with a big grin. I smiled back and she started to gaze at me. "What?" I asked curiously.

"Are you ok? You're going red," she replied looking closer at me.

"Ehh, I am??" I said, feeling embarrassed.
She put her soft, warm hand on my forehead.

"Hmm, maybe I should take you home, you could be getting a fever," she assumed.

"Yeah, maybe..." I whispered, looking at the ocean.

As she gave me a ride home, she said, "Hey who's Melanie?"

"Melanie?" I asked, pretending I didn't know what she was talking about.

"Yeah I heard you saying her name a while ago," she honestly replied.

"Oh, I don't know, I just thought that was a nice name," I uncertainly said.

When we arrived at my place, Dane got out of the car and helped me out.

She brought me to the door, and hugged me tight. I could feel the warmth of her body on mine. "I hope you had fun today," she said, letting go of me.

I sure did!" I replied, as my auntie came to the door. I've lived with my Auntie,

"Well, see you tomorrow," she said. Then I remembered tomorrow was the first day of year 10.

I got up on my tippy toes and ruffled her hair. "You too," I responded.

The very next day, I walked down the street with my head down low, earphones in my ears and hands in my pockets. I thought about yesterday, and how I lied to Dane.

Suddenly, I bumped into someone and fell to the ground. "Oww," I said, rubbing my butt.

Oh, sorry Jess!" a familiar voice said. I looked up and saw Maddie, one of my closest friends, standing beside Zoe, her boyfriend and my friend.

Maddie is really pretty, and was someone I could always count on, she was always nice and supportive towards me.

"Oh, hey Maddie," I said, as she helped me up off the ground. "Are you alright Jess?" Zoe asked, putting her arm around Maddie.

"Yeah, I'm Ok. So, are you guys excited about year 10?" I responded as we continued to walk to school.

"Not really, it's gonna be tough studying for school certificate," Maddie replied, with a sigh.

But Zoe will help you, right? She's in year 11 now, so she should be able to help you," I asked Zoe.

Yeah, I'll help." All of a sudden, we noticed Zoe's bus was already leaving.

"Ahh! I'll see you later Ok. Love you Madz!" Zoe said as she bolted off for the bus, yelling out to stop. Maddie stuttered and sighed. "I love you too..." she said gloomily.

When Maddie and I reached the end of the street, we met up with Dane and continued to walk to school. We talked and talked, however for a reason unknown, Dane was so quiet.

She would usually join in and talk non-stop, but not this time. I was scared, worried. Why was she like this? Was it something I did? Why isn't she telling me? These thoughts ran in my head and I couldn't get them out. "...

Jess? Are you listening?" Maddie asked.

"Huh? Oh yeah," I replied.

"Geez what's with you two? You're so quiet, did something happen?" she unsurely questioned us.

We both looked at her, and then looked at each other. We all fell silent as we reached the school gates.
Dane turned her head, and looked to the ground, with a heart-breaking look on her face.

Before homeroom, Maddie came and sat next to me. "Hey, what's with you and Dane? You're acting like you don't know each other," she considerately whispered.

"I don't know..." I replied. Maddie walked back to her seat as our teacher walked in.

During classes, I couldn't get my mind off the fact that Dane was hiding something from me.

I constantly looked back at Dane, to try and get her attention, but it didn't work. It was weird not talking to Dane; we would usually always talk about something.

I knew something was wrong, so I planned to find out what.
