It was a start of another day. The sun shone brightly on my face, and the sound of birds singing their songs just assured me that today would be a good day.
As I walked down the road, thoughts of Dane entered my mind once again. I didn't get much sleep last night; I stayed up looking at the sky, wondering what Dane had on her mind that day.
All of a sudden I felt a hand on my back. "Hey Jess!" a sweet voice said.
Then from the corner of my eye I saw Mafe, walking up next to me.
"Hey Mafe!" I responded. We turned to the next street and caught up with Dane.
"Hey there Dane!" Mafe said, punching her shoulder.
"Oww, what was that for?" she replied. Dane acted as if yesterday never happened.
As they joked off in front of me, all I wanted to do was ask her about it. But I couldn't find the strength to confront her, until the end of the day.
"Hey, Dane!" I yelled out.
As she turned around, I tripped and she caught me. Embarrassed, I quickly got up.
"S-Sorry" I said.
"It's Ok. Oh, Maddie said there was something you wanted to ask me?" she wondered curiously.
"She did? ... Oh well, I was just wondering..." I hesitated.
"Yes?" she asked. "Um, what happened to you? Yesterday, you were so quiet... is there something you're not telling me?" I questioned her, stuttering.
"You too... aren't you hiding something from me?" she angrily said.
Saddened, I stopped talking and held onto my necklace. "We both promised to always tell each other everything," I said heartrendingly.
I guess we both broke that promise..." Dane replied, walking away.
That day, I lay on my bed, and thought about what she said. Those exact words just going around and around in my head.
It hurts me so much, to know that she doesn't know how I truly feel about her. And it hurts me even more, wanting this feeling to fade away, because I know there isn't anyone else in the world like her.
So kind, so sincere... But sooner or later, I'm going to have to tell her the truth.
For her to trust me again, I'd have to tell her about Melanie, my dear sister.
The following day, after school, I visited Dane.
I walked up to her doorstep, as I was about to ring the door bell, but... something made me stop, and turn away.
While I walked off, it started to rain and I felt the cold water dripping on my skin.
As I was near the end of the street, I was suddenly stopped by a warm feeling, and I closed my eyes, remembering all the times Dane and I hugged.
This warm feeling, felt like one of her hugs, her warm, love filled hugs. I opened my eyes, to find Dane's arms wrapped around me.
Surprised, I turned around, and we gazed into each other's eyes, with the rain falling upon us.
She brought me to her house, since I wanted to talk to her.
As we sat in the living room, on opposite sofas, there were so many things I wanted to tell her.
But first ...
"Melanie was my sister" I sorrowfully said. "Hmm...?" Dane wondered. "You wanted to know who Melanie was... She was my younger sister.
When she was little she developed a brain tumor which caused painful headaches that made her bleed. We didn't have enough money for the surgery, since my mom only had one job, and my dad left us when Melanie was 3.
So, Melanie had to deal with the headaches, and we had to deal with her death. When she died, my mother couldn't take all the guilt she had. She blamed Melanie's death on herself.
I couldn't do anything since I was only 9. Then my mother hung herself... and ever since then I've lived with my auntie. I've had to deal with all this sorrow, and pain. But it's easy when you don't think about it..."
Dane fell silent. "Jess ... I'm sorry" she said softly. "No, don't be. It wasn't your fault," I replied.
"And the necklace?" she asked. "It was Melanie's. She gave it to me right before she died," I responded, holding onto it.
"Oh..." she had nothing to say, nothing at all.
She came and sat next to me, and comforted me. I just broke down and cried. But this isn't what I planned. I stopped immediately. I looked into Dane's eyes; I could tell she knew I was being serious now.
"So, Dane, what happened? The other day, you were so quiet... what's wrong?" I asked.
"I was planning to tell you the other day, but I just couldn't bear to look at those sad eyes... I have to tell you... but you're not going to like it," she said, looking straight to the ground.
As she spoke, she told me three words... those three words brought tears to my eyes.
A/N: Three words!!! Any guess what's this 3 words? ..
