"Surprise!" we screamed, turning on the lights as Zoe and Maddie opened the door.
"Congratulations Zoe!" I said, walking up to her. "Wow. You guys did all this for me?" she asked.
"Yup! Congratulations!" Maddie replied, giving her a hug as she kissed her on the forehead.
We brought her to a table full of food, drinks and presents. "By the way, since your birthday is in a couple of days, this is also your birthday party," Mafe added.
"Well, thanks everyone!" she responded. As we sat on a table, eating and talking, the sight of Maddie and Zoe, for reasons unknown, gave me mixed feelings.
Jealousy, sadness, anger, but also confusion. I needed to get away from here. "I'm just going to get some fresh air, Ok?" I said, getting up. "Ok, don't take long, we still have to open the presents, and sing on the karaoke!" Maddie replied.
I walked over to the balcony in the room upstairs.
I looked up at the bright, white moon, pondering about what had just happened. I guess I just miss Dane... I sighed and sat in the corner of the balcony. My head leaning on the railing, my eyes gazing into the sky. Then I felt tired. But why wouldn't I be? I've been here all day, fixing this stupid party. I mean, it's not stupid it's just... as I wandered off, talking to my conscience like some weirdo, I heard I voice next to me.
"The moon looks beautiful doesn't it?" the voice said. I looked to my left and saw Dave. "Ugh, yeah it does."
"Do you mind if I sit with you?" he asked politely.
"No, go ahead," I replied, not knowing why he was here.
I still didn't know why he liked me, out of all people, why me? I turned my head slightly, just so my eyes could get a view of Dave. Surely some other girls would want him as a boyfriend. He's nice, caring and charming. I mean, who could resist him? With his bright sea-green eyes, that reminded me of the beach, light brown hair in a 'just out of bed' hairstyle, and his soft, yet deep voice. It would be a surprise if I found out not much girls like him.
As I continued to stare at him, describing him in my head, he noticed I was staring at him and looked at me.
"What?" he asked.
"Huh? Oh, nothing," I assured him, looking back at the sky. "I really miss Dane..."
He sighed lightly and replied, "Me too."
"She was always there for us. She always knew what to say, and she never judged any of us," he added.
"Yeah... I guess no one can replace her," I responded.
"C'mon, let's go. They're all probably wondering where we are," Dave said.
Just then, I see Maddie and Mafe at the door. "We found them! Aww, look at those two lovebirds! Aren't they cute!?" Maddie said a bit too loud.
Dave got up and responded, "We were just talking, geeez." He walked away, with his hands in his pockets.
"What's his problem? We were only joking," Mafe pouted. Suddenly, Maddie pulled me up off the ground. "Now, let's go sing!"
As Mafe, Maddie and I sang, Zoe and Dave sat on the sofa next to us, looking really bored.
"C'mon guys! You're not gonna act like this at next year's party, are you?!" Maddie exclaimed.
"Next year?" I asked. "We're having an after party for our graduation! You're so slow Jess!" Mafe clarified. Then, I remembered we were going to be in year 12 soon. These last 2 years have seemed so fast. And it seemed like just yesterday Dane was here with us.
———————Days past, weeks, and soon, months. I was getting stressed from all the homework and studying. I never knew year 12 would be this frustrating. I sat at my desk up in my room, full of books and study notes.
As I had my head in the clouds, staring out the window, arms folded on my desk, laying my head down, I noticed something sticking out from under a pile of books. I shoved all the books onto the floor to find a picture of me and Dane when we were kids. It reminded me of how fun and happy we were when we were little.
And for some reason, I was so calm, and relaxed. But I won't cry because it's over, I'll smile because it happened, because I had the chance to be with Dane for all these years.
A/N: Dave? Jess? Hummmm
