It was evening time and the sky was turning to dusk as Victor held me in his arms, his warmth comforting me like a blanket.
I smiled, gently pulling myself closer to his body as I embraced him. Breathing in deeply, I caught a scent of his aftershave, or perhaps it was his breath, as it smelt minty and foresty. It reminded me of my brother Jerome, in a way.
It made me feel like a child again.
I was quickly pulled away from my memories, and Victor his sleep, as we both sat up at the sound of the door slamming shut.
"What the hell do you think you two are doing?!" Selina growled, throwing her stuff aside, "You're sleeping with Victor?! Are you for real?!"
"Relax," Victor responded, blinking his eyes rapidly as he woke up, "The boss sent me to collect her."
I frowned, oh yeah... I'd forgotten why he was here.
"Oh, and who's your boss?" Selina questioned, crossing her arms as she walked towards us.
"Jeremiah." I answered, gulping before I added, "But I'm not going."
I noticed Victor snap his head at me from the corner of my eye, "Er, yes you are." He said, his voice firm.
Sighing, I turned to him, "Victor, I can't go back. Jeremiah will kill me. He will."
"If your brother's after you then you can't stay here," Selina interrupted, "I'm not going to get myself killed over you."
Wow... some friend she was.
"Pack your stuff and leave." She continued, moving away from the bed as she diverted her attention elsewhere.
"Listen," Victor whispered after a moment, holding my hands in his, "I'm not going to let anything happen to you, okay?"
I chuckled, "Like you can stop it."
He nodded, "I can. And I will." His eyes were locked onto mine and I could tell he was being serious. And with his reassurance of protection, I agreed.
"Wait, hold up." Selina spoke up, bringing herself back into the conversation again, "Why does Jeremiah want to kill you so bad? Isn't he your brother?"
"Yeah..." I answered, trailing off as I thought back to my 'brother', though I guess I didn't really think of him as a brother, "I mean, I don't really know who Jeremiah is. I never knew him growing up and he wasn't really mentioned in our family... I guess I sort of forgot about him." I said, my eyes staring off into the distance before coming back to reality, I coughed as I turned to Selina, "Look, my 'brother' doesn't care about anyone but himself. He never did. It doesn't mean anything to him that we're family - he could simply slit my throat if he wanted to. Just because he can."
"Jemma, you need to come back with me." Victor muttered, holding my hand once again, "If you don't; Jeremiah will send someone else to finish the job. I've promised I'll protect you."
With tears in my eyes, I didn't know what was the right thing to do. I know I'd agreed to go only a few moments before, however, now I'd just got to thinking of how mad my brother would be. And all the horrible things he could, and would, do to me.
I shook my head, sniffling slightly, "I don't think I can..."
After a moment of silence, Victor abruptly got up saying, "Well, I'm not letting someone else come and murder you, so, I'll be taking you with me."
He got himself dressed quickly before roughly grabbing me, wrapping his arms around my waist and pulling me closer to his body as he attempted to carry me away half dressed.
Though I wouldn't go without a fight as I starting kicking and biting him in an attempt to free myself... didn't work.
