I look behind me and see Mary.

"Hi," I say. She doesn't respond.

She looks mean. Her trimmed eyebrows are arched in a high position.

She is wearing the most ridiculous outfit I've ever seen.

"Hello, Mary," I repeat.

"Hi," She says back to me.

She opens her locker and sprays herself with Vanilla Perfume.

I cough.

"Hey Mary, um, would you like to come over after school today?" I ask.

Mary shakes her head no. "I have a date with Cam."

I bite my lip. "Wow Mary, that's great! Why didn't you tell me?"

Mary shrugs and walks off, leaving me cold and alone.

I kick her locker in frustration and walk to the library.

"Shhhhhhhhhh" Mrs. Wadesonn commands to 2 popular girls gossiping.

The boy I saw a few days ago is reading in the corner.

I walk up to him and lightly tap his shoulder.

I wave.

"Hello," he says. "Wait can you hear me?" I mouth.

He shakes his head no.

"Oh," I mouth. "Do you lip read?"

The boy nods.

"Hi my name is Stella," I mouth. "What's yours?"

"Alex," he says. His voice is soothing.

"That's nice," I mouth.

He smiles at me and opens his book up again.

"Mind if I read?" "No."

I study him. He has short black hair and blue eyes. He has a lightly tanned face and has long sweaters and jeans.

I really like Alex.

"Well, someone had a good day!" Mary says to me at my locker.

"Yes I did! I met Alex at the library, and.."

"I meant me, stupid." Mary says, slamming her locker.

"Oh," I say, fighting back tears. Mary has never called me stupid before. I watched her wobble away on her heels and blow a kiss to Cam.

Cam waves and winks, then starts kissing Jessica.

I roll my eyes.

Sometimes I just don't get boys.
