Despite Evelyn's cameo appearance, that was the best birthday party Danielle had ever had. She owed it all to Billy and his incredibly thoughtful gift. She didn't realize how incredibly attractive he was until he gave her that necklace and she found herself praying for the weekend to go by faster so she could see him again.
"I never asked you about your party, nena," Mr. Toledano said at dinner on Sunday evening.
"Oh, it was fine. I got more than enough 'Purple Rain' records. People are so unoriginal. I bought the album as soon as it came out. I'm appalled people even considered buying it," Danielle said.
"I noticed you got a Miraculous Medal," he observed. "Who gave it to you?"
Danielle smiled. "This guy named Billy. He's really sweet."
"Is he Catholic?"
"I don't think so, Daddy," she laughed. "Sorry."
"You have a boyfriend already?" Mrs. Toledano asked.
"He's not my boyfriend."
"Didn't you just end things with Steve? Give him a break before you move on."
"Mom, Steve and I broke up last year. You're acting like it was yesterday. And for the record, he broke up with me and went straight to Nancy Wheeler. I'm the one who needed a break between relationships." Danielle finished her breakfast and grabbed her backpack from her room.
"Walking again?" Mr. Toledano asked when she returned downstairs.
"It's a really nice day," Danielle reasoned, kissing her dad goodbye.
"I'll drive you," Corey offered. He obviously had nothing better to do.
"That's okay. Go find a hobby." She blew her brother a kiss and walked out the door.
If she timed it correctly, this was the exact time she ran into Billy's Camaro last week. She strolled down the street and kicked rocks to waste time, listening carefully for the sound of a roaring engine. All she heard was the wind shaking the trees and some birds chirping amongst themselves. She rolled her eyes and walked the rest of the distance to school.
Billy was still sitting in the driveway, keys in the ignition and engine running. He'd gotten off the hook with Max this morning but it came with a cost—a fresh bruise on his cheek and frizzy hair. The latter irritated him the most. He could make up a story about the bruise later. He finished his cigarette and shifted his car into reverse.
Danielle was entertaining a group of people when Billy pulled into the school parking lot. He wanted to ask about the necklace and if she still liked it which sounded like a stupid inquiry when he really thought about it. He never knew what to say to her. He lit his second cigarette of the day and went in for the kill.
