Billy was still thinking about Saturday night come Monday morning. It was the perfect date until Danielle's Steve Harrington fetish sabotaged the rest of the night. She probably would have agreed to a second date if he hadn't shown up out of the blue. Steve couldn't care less about her but she still gave him the light of day. Meanwhile, Billy was trying his hardest to take things slow and form a relationship organically which was something he'd never done before. He could've gotten straight to the point at the Halloween party but he just had to do things the right way. He never did anything the right way.
He toyed with his necklace and stared mindlessly at the alarm clock that wouldn't go off for another fifteen minutes. Danielle was wearing the exact same necklace but probably hadn't thought twice about him since she got out of his car Saturday night.
What a fucking waste of money, he thought.
Billy got out of bed and got dressed for school, silencing the alarm as he tucked his shirt into his jeans. Very rarely did he wake up late. Oversleeping meant dealing with his father and he did his best to avoid encounters with him. Billy stashed a pack of cigarettes in his jacket pocket and slung his backpack over his shoulder.
If he timed it correctly, no one would be awake at this time, meaning he could leave without enduring a stupid conversation with one of his family members. He loaded snacks from the kitchen into his backpack before walking out the front door scot-free—but he wasn't Max free. She stood in front of his car, skateboard in hand.
"The hell do you want?" he asked, lighting his first cigarette of the day.
"For you to take me to school," she responded.
"You got up early enough to skate there and back again. I'm not taking you anywhere," Billy retorted, unlocking his car and tossing his backpack inside.
"I'm gonna tell your dad you were on a date instead of at a 'school thing'," she countered, tossing red hair out of her face when a breeze blew by.
"How about you stay out of my business?" Billy countered.
"I will if you take me to school." Max let herself into the car, giving Billy no choice but to take her with him.
Danielle preferred to sleep in until the last minute possible, hitting the snooze button three too many times. Dana would be here any second to give her a ride to school as she'd promised. She threw on the outfit she'd laid out the night before and tied her mass of hair into a messy knot on top of her head. Wearing her hair down every day got boring after a while. She needed to get people's attention.
The kitchen was empty when Danielle arrived downstairs for a quick breakfast. She glanced outside the window for her dad's car but it wasn't there. She needed to leave the house before her mom ruined her morning.
