“My father’s enemies?” I mutter to myself. What does he mean?

Erik takes a deep breath. “Your parents and I were close. They helped me achieve my potential as an artichect, magician, musician and more.” He continues, “Before your mother died, your father made me promise if he died that I’d take care of you.”

I can barely stand so I sit on the piano bench. He watches me take everything he’s saying in. I feel shocked.

“Christine, your father is dying because of addiction to heroin that he occurred when undercover for the FBI.” Erik tells me. “Apparently, the criminals figured your father worked for the government five months ago, and have put out a hitter to kill you when your father dies.”

I look into his eyes. I want to think he’s lying. But something in his eyes tells me he’s speaking the truth. “Why didn’t you tell me this before?” I furiously ask, “My father’s dying because of you!”

“Christine, your father made me promise not to tell until we were married.” Erik says in a snappy tone. "I'm offering my protection to you if we marry."

“You’re insane! My father would never approve of this!” I scream at him and start hitting his shoulders. Nadir comes running in the room, panting.

“What on earth is going on?” Nadir looks at me, than at Erik for an explanation.

“Tell your friend that I’m not marrying him and he can’t make me!” I snap at Nadir, and walk off out of the music room furious.

What am I doing here? I should be angry, and trying to run away. Instead I’m thinking of how nice the man was for giving me the gift of music. Do I really want to marry someone who betrayed me, or better yet, I find out my father betrayed me. How can Dad want me to marry a man I’ve only known for three weeks! I can’t take it anymore. I have to leave now.

I go into the kitchen quietly. I need to find a key for the kitchen door, so opening drawers, and more drawers-I finally find one. I quickly pick the lock. I can hear Erik talking very loudly, to be exact-shouting at Nadir from the other side of the mansion. Unlocking the door, I try really hard to just open it without making any sounds. It creaks, and I take one last look behind me before fleeing.

                                                                          ^^^^^

I’ve been walking for what seems like days. Darkness covers the sky, so I know that it has been only a few hours, but when I’m by myself I think everything seems longer.

Oh, how I wish that everything could be normal again, but it never will be, now that I know about my father slowly dying. I choke back a sob. Will he be alive when I get back? He knew that Erik kidnapped me, so he wouldn’t have called the police. No one would even know I was gone.

I suddenly hear a faint sound. It sounded like a car… Erik! Great. I get off the road and hide behind some bushes. It feels like I’m in the Nazgul, from The Lord of the Rings on their horses chasing me. I hold my breath when a car stops. I hear footsteps walking around. I peek through the leaves, a familiar figure stands straight and tall.

“Erik, she's going to hide. Christine's not going to be on the road when she hears you. If she wants to see you, she’ll see you. Let’s look in the woods.” I hear Nadir’s voice say. I realize the chances of him finding me are higher now.

“I know. Christine is too clever.” Erik admits.

Staying low and clear, hopefully from their sight, I crouch down. Footsteps draw closer to my hiding spot. I hold my breath, not wanting to have them find me.

“I think she may have headed to Elizabethtown.” I hear Nadir call, “Footprints here look like hers.” I peek through a little hole in the bushes, he points north. I need to head west to find home.

“She’ll probably go through Elizabethtown to Winchester. It’s much faster, and she knows Winchester pretty well.” Erik says, examining the footprints. “Let’s get in the car and drive there.”

Waiting till I hear the car engine sound and drive away. I need to get to my father before they do. I quietly stand up. I need to get to my dad, before my kidnapper does...
