I want to cringe and cover myself on the concrete sidewalk. But why? Maybe because I am embarrassed- no, I think its more like I am afraid of what he'll say. Or better yet if he finds out it was Erik who killed his brother?
"What? Married?" Raoul exclaims, "To whom?!"
"Uh, who do you think? A man." I answer. Now I'm getting back to who I am.
"I kinda assumed that. To what man did you marry, Christine?" He asks, sounding angry. I guess I deserved that for being sarcastic.
I reply quickly, being very uncomfortable with how this conversation was turning out. "Uh...Well, my teacher." Raoul gives me a disgusted look. "None of our school teachers." I say hastily, "I married my music teacher."
"Why the heck would you marry your music teacher?!" He exclaimed angrily. His eyes are burning. I take a deep breath and am about to reply...
"Because she wanted to." A dark voice interrupts him. Raoul turns around and sees the tall, strong figure whom I immediately see to be my husband in front of him.
"Sir, this is none of your business. I must ask you to leave." Raoul tells the stranger, rather annoyed.
"Raoul." I quietly say, touching his arm, "He's my husband." I then stand next to my husband, friend, and music teacher. Erik squeezes me tight. I squeeze back, and smile at Erik. Facing Raoul, I said the best thing I had ever said to him,
"Raoul, I never can love you. If you thought I might, I'm sorry. Erik is my one and only."
Raoul stood there, dumbfounded. He stood there very still for a few moments, sighed and said,"I knew in the back of my mind that you never would. I'm sorry for all of this trouble I caused," He nods at Erik, "and I wish you and your husband the best. May I hug you one last time?"
I nod with tears in my eyes. He was carrying it with dignity. I hurt him, and he still forgave me. I would never forget that. We hug briefly, and after I decided to tell him about his brother.
"Before you leave, I need to tell you something. You're brother, Philip, committed suicide to keep from getting caught by the law. I'm so sorry." Raoul looks at me funny.
"He always was getting in trouble. I guess it caught up to him." He said shakily. I could tell he was on the verge of crying, but was holding them back for some reason.
"Would you like us to leave?" I ask kindly. He nods and as we walk away.
We made it to Erik's car and once inside, I started sobbing. Erik pulled me into his arms for comfort, as I sobbed for what seemed like forever.
"He's so..." I gulp, " alone now."
"Shh, it'll be okay. He'll be fine." Erik soothes me.
I stop crying after a moment and stand up straight. "Well, we better head home." I say, looking out the window. Here begins my new and wonderful life with Erik.
"Erik?"
"Hmm?" Erik says, his eyes still on the road.
"I forgot to tell you something..." I say, hoping he will like what I'm about to say.
"What is it?" He asks.
"I'm pregnant." I announce, and watch for his reaction. He pulls over to a gas station stop, and pulls the brake.
"What did you just say?" He asks, staring intently at me.
I smile and say again, "I'm pregnant."
"You're-you're pregnant? There's a baby growing inside of you?" He stares wonderingly towards my belly. "How did that happen?"
I laugh awkward. "Umm... do you really want me to go into detail?" He laughs, and leans over and kisses me. I never thought in my entire life how happy I could be with him.
And I am.
