We finally pulled up to the Dillinger building and the suv stopped. Shane looked over at me with a tentative smile on his face. Then opened his door and slid out. I followed suit and walked to his side of the car and followed him up the stairs in silence as his friend followed behind us.
Together We walked through the very large tinted glass doors and into the foyer. An older man sat behind a security desk that was connected to metal detectors and a conveyer belt. All the other men from the previous week were gone.
"Mr. Dillinger, Mr. Silva, and the lovely Miss Klein again. " the old man greeted with a slight nod of his head.
Both men just smiled at the old man. I jumped as the man apparently named Mr. Silva walked through the metal detectors behind us and they went of in alarm, startling him as well.
"Really, Mike? Why do you do that to me?" Mr. Silva laughed holding his chest
" For all the jokes you pulled on me when you was a kid, and still do boy!"
The three of us walked into the elevator and Shane pushed the 15th floor.
"You've lived here since you were a kid?" I asked into the silence to both of them
"Finn and I both have. That's why I always came to your house in high school. I didn't want you to know the truth about my life. But we'll get to that in a little bit." Shane answered for them both. Finn Silva, to my left, nodded in agreement.
" How do you fit into all this, Finn ?" I asked facing him
" Not here. Were almost to my office and you can ask any question you want" Shane answered again
Before I could protest the elevator doors opened in front of us to a beautiful stone wall and indoor waterfall. The beauty of this building was lost on my complete confusion and anger last week. Shane led us down the long hallway to two dark wooden doors and opened them to his office. He walked to his desk and set down behind it while Finn walked to a couch against the far left wall. I, once again, slowly walked to the chair in front of Shane's desk and sat down. I folded my hands across my knees and sat back in the velvet chair.
" Ask your questions Thea" Shane pushed as he propped his legs up on desk and crossed them.
" Who is Finn to you?" I started with. Shane smiled and looked over at Finn who was now sprawled out across the plush deep sea green love seat.
" I'll let him answer this one"
"Finn Silva, second in command and best friend of course," I tried not to let that make my stomach drop a little, it shouldn't have. He was a guy, and it had been six years, he was allowed to have another best friend. " I'm in charge of security for your friend here, keeping him safe and just small day to day things. Not big ticket items of business that's all ya boy there. And of course I'm in charge off all the comedy and dashing good looks. If you need Any chocolate eye candy to keep you laughing, I'm your boy." He made a grand gesture with his hand over his body.
" Why didn't you tell me goodbye when you left?" I faced Shane again as the question bubbled out of my mouth.
He sat up, pulling his feet off the desk and leaning his elbows on onto it, letting out a sigh.
" That was a lot quicker than I expected. Listen this whole thing, " he waved above his head with his hand "my whole world, its a lot of pressure. And at seventeen having that thrown on me when my father died, I was lost. I wanted to tell you, I did, but I also knew that If I did, you'd be in danger. More than anything I knew I couldn't allow that. I couldn't lie to you constantly with me being in charge after my fathers funeral. I'd hate myself even more if I lied to you constantly."
