First Person; Joshua Dun
—"Okay, so Debby's over there," I say to Tyler. He looks over, then back to me, and nods. "Since you're apart of this now, you get to have a say in what I say to her. It's gonna start out with me telling her I think we should break up, because I'm gay, and when she asks for proof - I'm gonna mention you. What should I say?"
"I don't know!" Tyler mini panics. "Like, that you and I have been talking for a while and that we're interested in each other." He says, and I smile. He smiles back, calming his breathing down.
"Perfect idea. I'm gonna go now. Wish me luck, and we'll talk later." I say, and start walking away. But I turn around again. "Um, this little thing we have going on- it might involve kissing, just saying." I say and he nods.
"That's okay," he laughs and then off I go.
I go up to Debby. She smiles, and wraps her arms around me. I make an uncomfortable face, and place my hands on her wrists and pull them away from around me. Her face drops, and I raise my eyebrows.
"Debby, I think we should break up." I say, earning a scoff from her.
"Did I do something wrong? Am I a bad girlfriend?" She asks, her lip quivering slightly. Crocodile tears were forming in her eyes. "I'm sorry, Joshykins. Just give me another chance."
"I can't do that, Debs. I just, I've been keeping something from you. For so long. And it's eating me, and I just can't continue with us being an us." I say, and her face tells me to tell her what this secret it. "Debby, I'm gay."
"Bullshit!" She crosses her arms.
Billie is walking up the hall, seeing everything that's going on. I look at her, and she's laughing.
"Who is she?" Debby spits. "Who's the other girl? I know you're not gay, Josh. There has to be someone else. Oh my God, it's Bella! Isn't it?" She raises her eyebrows.
"No, it isn't Billie." I correct her on the name and she rolls her eyes. "We both know Billie is only my best friend, nothing more. I'm just, I've been texting someone recently and I'm really interested in him."
"Who?" She raises an eyebrow. I look over to Tyler, who's staring at us. He and I make eye contact. I look back st Debby, who then looks over at Tyler. "It's him." Her face drops, but in an angry way.
She turns on her heels, and starts walking towards him. I follow her, and people are staring. "Don't you say anything that can hurt him, Deborah!" She stops in her tracks.
Tyler's just standing there, a little tense cause Debby can be scary when she's mad.
"You really just called me Deborah." Her voice cracked. "Kiss him then, let me know it's really over." She says, screaming louder. Lots of the students looked our way, but I just made a look and most of them went back to what they were doing.
"Tyler and I aren't even together, yet." I mumble. "I just said we were interested in each other. There's no way we could kiss right now." Josh shrugs, looking down.
"Fine then. But I want proof from the second you guys get together. I wanna know if you're lying to me, Joshua. If you don't love me, just say it. It won't hurt." She says, and walks away in tears. She lied to me just now.
It will hurt.
I look at Tyler. "Thank you," I laugh. He laughs a little too. We trade numbers, to actually start talking. Billie catches up with the two of us, chewing on yet another "extra chewy" granola bar.
"Some show to watch." Billie smiles, and we shrug before we make our own, seperate ways to homeroom.
