"Dexter when you said 'let's go to America' I was expecting the relaxing beaches of Miami or sight seeing in New York, not this." Saracen flung his arms out in frustration, taking in his surroundings.

Dexter Vex and Saracen Rue were standing in the middle of a barren wasteland in California. Dry earth as far as the eye could see and just on the horizon the silhouette of a town. There were no trees and the only shrubbery that managed to survive were dry, spiky things that Saracen had cut himself on more than once. There wasn't even any tumble weed, there was nothing here!

"There is nothing here! You didn't even take me to the interesting part of California" Saracen grumbled
"All of California is interesting" Dexter began
"This part isn't"
"But look at all this culture"
"What culture?"
"Ooo look at that over there-
"It's a bush" Saracen interrupted
"-an American bush"
"Dexter why are we here" Saracen said bluntly
"-oh look at that over there, some dying grass-
"Dexter"
"-so much fun for all the family-
"Dexter!"
"Yes" He said innocently
"What. Are. We. Doing. Here" Saracen ordered
"Ok promise you won't be mad-
"No"
"Remember when we came here before, you specifically told me not to take anything back with me as a souvenir because of the-
"Curse"
"right the Curse, well you see the funny thing is-
"You didn't"
"I did"

Saracen pinched the bridge of his nose.
"It's like having a dog" he said to himself.
Saracen sighed for a very long time then finally said "What did you take?"

Dexter reached into his pocket and carefully pulled out a blood red hanker-chief. He then very slowly pulled away the first corner and revealed an extravagant silver necklace with a white diamond in the pendant. Saracen stared in wonder. "It's..beautiful"
"I know" Dexter said
"Why would you take something like this. I never took you as the jewellery type."
"I'm not the jewellery type. It's for my girl."
"Your girl!?"
"What? I can be romantic. I just thought it was a nice thing to do." Dexter said
Saracen stared at him
"Don't judge me" Dexter argued
"I'm not"
He was.

The sun was high in the sky and was beaming down hot, blistering rays. The blue blanket  that sat way above the ground was bleak and as barren as the earth they walked on. They started walking along a dirt path, worn down by years of travel. The two were quite for awhile, comfortable in their silence. Saracen looked at Dexter out of the corner of his eye. Vex was hot. He was sweating from head to toe. He looked like he was going to collapse if he didn't get water soon.

"Are we there yet?" Dexter panted
"You know we're not" Saracen replied
"Could you just lie and tell me we are"
"Ok. We're here"
"Yay" Dexter weakly exclaimed and lazily threw his arms in the air.

They walked on for an hour before they came across train tracks half buried in the dirt, leading off north into a rundown town. Dexter sat on the tracks and whispered "Are we there yet?"
"Yes Dexter, we are here." Saracen replied, who was surprisingly not out of breath.
He walked up to a rotten wooden sign hammered into the cracked ground.
It read "Beware Bodie"
"Not ominous at all" He mumbled

Saracen stared across his surrounding. There was a scattering of wooden houses and in the middle of the cluster stood a proud church, marked with a cross on its steeple. Some of the buildings had collapsed in on themselves over time, while others were only missing bits of the roof or a window or two. Parts of machinery lay discarded across the ground, rusted and broken like a mechanical graveyard. There was a strange atmosphere to the whole place, everything appeared darker. Nothing seamed right. You always felt like you were being watched even though there wasn't a man, woman or child in site. A ghost town.

A gust of wind passed through the town making the houses creek in terror.
"God I hate this place, gives me the heebie-jeebies." Saracen said
Dexter walked up beside him "You and me both."
"Why did you have to take the necklace from here" Saracen whined "Couldn't you've taken it from a slightly less creepy and haunted town."
"There's nothing to worry about, we'll be fine." Dexter said and walked ahead.
"Said ever horror movie victim ever." Saracen mumbled then followed after.
