We can dream the dream we want together

Minho knew he wasn't going to sleep well the moment he closed his eyes.

He could feel the familiar crawl of fingertips as they trailed their way down his cheeks, reminding him of all the times tears has fallen.

Reminding him of all the painful memories he held so close.

But the thing he hated most about his nightmares was how they had taken control of Him too. How they ruined all the happy thoughts Minho would try and keep safe, they would always drag them out. Wrap them in chains and parade them around in all their blood and injuries in that piercing light that only appeared in dreams. The light that was more white than yellow and made sure that all you could see was the smears of hatred. The loss of love and the loss of joy.

As he closed his eyes, he could faintly hear Jisung gently humming a tune he didn't recognise. But it did little to calm the rapid beating of his heart as he was again enthralled into the realm of dreams.

"Minho! Today's the day huh?" Sam's face was glowing with joy and his eyes were shining.

Minho couldn't say he felt the same.

The day you turned 10 was supposed to be the best day of your life, you could finally find out who your soulmate was. The moment it had been ten years since you were born, the bond would solidify into its physical manifestation, the link through writing on your skin, and you could finally find out who your soulmate was, provided you are both over the age limit.

Some people have to wait months or years until they receive a message from their soulmate, like Chan. He had turned ten four months ago.

Some of the other people at school, girls especially, had been disappointed when they realised Chan wasn't their soulmate, but their disappointment soon turned to bitterness and a few of them had begun making fun of Chan.

Minho knew that Chan was upset about it, no matter how hard he tried to hide it.

That was the reason why he wasn't looking forwards to ten minutes time. What if his soulmate wasn't old enough and he would have to wait even longer?

Well, that was part of the reason.

He could hear Sam counting down the minutes next to him. What a coincidence their birthdays were on the same day, barely an hour apart.

"Sam?" Minho had opened his mouth before he knew what he was going to say.

"Mm?"

"I- uh... After today..."

We'll still be friends right?
I'll still be able to see you everyday even when you've fallen in love with someone new?
Even though I love you and you can never love me back.

But Minho couldn't say any of that so he just shook his head. And returned to looking out of the window, trying to blink back the tears from his eyes.

He had been feeling sick for weeks, dreading this day. He had tried to make the most of his last time with Sam before he met someone who could make him happier than Minho could. Before Minho lost him to someone new.

They had agreed years ago that Minho would wait the 57 minutes between his and Sam's birthday to write on his arm so that they could do it together.

Minho had agreed, obviously, anything to prolong the experience taking place, and anything to make Sam happy.

"Five minutes!"
