Jack was almost invisible. Noone at the orphanage noticed him, ever. Professor Disney oftentimes forgot his name. That is why he was so mischievous, he craved attention, and he craved it badly. Not that his parents didn't give him any, but they were gone.
So, Jack did what every orphan had to do in that situation; pranks! He pranked people to and fro. He sneaked into the kitchen and stole sugar cubes. He ran into the woods and catched squirrels to then place them in kids' underpants. He was like a god of mischief, a tiny Loki, but still, invisible nontheless.
People were so used to him, to his unbearable humour, to his loud presence, he became almost ghostlike, and he was more of a poltergeist than a child. His mischievous presence went unnoticed by everyone. Naturally, as a child with no other purpose in life, he never gave up with his mission.
He was out in the search for mice when he met Merida and Hiccup, and them being the first people who noticed him in a while, they became fast friends.
Then they met Rapunzel, and with her friendship he became aware that he was never truly alone when either of his friends were nearby. He focused all his attention in protecting their friendship.
"If anyone even dares to harm any of you guys, I swear by my staff" Said the kid, yielding his branch pridefully "I will hunt them down"
"Or I'll shoot 'em" Completed Merida, drawing her handmade bow and shot a play-pretend arrow.
"Or I'll burn them with my fire breathing dragon!" Said Hiccup, bouncing around excitedly. His imaginary friend nodding as well.
"Or I'll hit them with a pan!" Giggled Rapunzel.
"Oh, guys, this was my heroic moment" Said Jack, sinking his shoulders. "I was supposed to take care of y'all"
Merida chuckled "Oh, c'mon, laddie, ye don't need to be no hero for us tae love you"
"She's right" Nodded Rapunzel, sweetly, "We are a family and we take care of each other."
"No one is getting separated" Finished Hiccup. "Right?"
"Aye" nodded Merida. "And that's that."
May-be, but Jack still promised himself to always stay on the watch to protect his siblings form all harm.
And so, one day a couple came into the foster home, seeking for a child to love and cherish. Jack saw it as a threat to his loved family, and he convinced the others of so. They avoided being seen at all costs. They ran to the woods and hid in their hideout, but miss Amblin (Professor Disney's assistant) found them and took them back into the house. Jack caused a distraction and the four ran through the house full, avoiding the couple by all means. They ran into the kitchen and Mrs Potts kicked them out. They were too smart to hide in the dorm rooms, for the hideous couple would obviously take a look in there, so instead, they ran to the attic.
It was a vast, dusty room with a lot of illumination. The ceiling was covered in spiderwebs and there were broken beds everywhere. Doll heads, old-time furniture that had been moved there when the house became an orphanage. They walked around quietly, amazed by all they could see, and Rapunzel was the prime discoverer of said expedition, for she uncovered a lovely wooden wardrobe that was hidden under a damp cloth.
"Guys, lookie, we should hide here!" Chriped Rapunzel, trying hard to hide her excitement.
"That's stupid. Everyone knows it's nonesense to lock oneself inside a wardrobe" Mocked Jack, as he continued to help Hiccup build a fortress out of old mattresses.
"Merida?" Asked de blonde, pouting at her friend.
"Dunnae ask me. I'm not keen on shallow spaces."
"Please!" Cried Rapunzel. "Miss Amblin will notice immediately if we hide under those mattresses, but the wardrobe has nothing to lose!"
Merida and Hiccup looked at each other. They had mastered the art of wordless communication, and they both agreed that Rapunzel had a point.
"O-kay" Said Merida. "But we'll leave the door half open and you'll let me look out all the time"
Rapunzel nodded passionately and opened the wardrobe. It was full of snow coats, they assumed belonged to professor Disney. She was the first to go inside, as she felt the soft, silky fur tickle her face. She sighed, extasied by the lovely textures.
Hiccup was next, and then held Merida's hand as she stepped inside, still too scared of said places, for they brought her memories of one an atrocious day.
"Nay, no way" Pouted Jack, "It is, by far, the most stupid thing you have ever come up with"
"Jack!" Scolded Hiccup. "You're being a jerk, and you'll get us all seen"
Jack sighed defeated and stepped into the cursed wardrobe, then Merida pulled the door and almost shut it, letting a small fraction of light still showing. She kept her gaze sticked to the light, too scared to be full into the depths of the wood.
"Guys, come, there's something here!" They all heard Rapunzel from the back of the wardrobe. "How big is this thing?"
"What, what is it?" Asked Hiccup, squeezing Merida's hand.
"My, I think it's snow!" Sung the blonde girl.
"Not only did you get us into some stupid wardrobe, but now you want to prank us? Cut it off, Zellie!" Complained Jack, cruelly.
Merida, too curious to succumb to her fears, got further into the wardrobe looking for the back wall, but instead, she felt cold, spikey things against her hand. She wimped, scared.
"She's right, there's something here!"
"You too, Meri-duh?!" Jack cussed, as he pulled the door accidentally and shut it.
No one noticed his awful mistake, for they were too caught up in the mystery of the depths of the wardrobe.
"Jack, they're not pulling anything, it is cold and damp" Said Hiccup.
The three children walked blindly through the coats and towards the end of the wardrobe, but instead found themselves walking among pine trees and over a newly fallen snow. Jack followed, incredulous, until he himself saw the unbelievable sky.
"How on earth-" He begun saying, as he tripped over a root and fell face first into the snow.
He was doing a great job protecting his family.
