“Welcome!” said Dumbledore as he stood up. The Sorting Ceremony had just ended and all of the new students had sat down at their new House tables. The chatter amongst the Great Hall had died down as everyone directed their attention to Professor Dumbledore. He had a long silver beard, a crooked nose and half-moon spectacles. He was a marvelous man and an ingenious wizard who was respected by all students (excluding a few select Slytherins).

“Welcome to another year at Hogwarts! I have a few things to say to you all, and as one of them is very serious, I think it best to get it out of the way before you become befuddled by our excellent feast…”

Dumbledore cleared his throat and Serena was waiting anxiously to hear what he had to say.

“As you will all be aware after their search of the Hogwarts Express, our school is presently playing host to some Dementors of Azkaban, who are here on Ministry of Magic business.  They are stationed at every entrance to the grounds, and while they are with us, I must make it plain that nobody is to leave the school without permission. Dementors are not to be fooled by tricks or disguises – or even Invisibility Cloaks. It is not in the nature of a Dementor to understand pleading or excuses. I therefore warn each and every one of you to give them no reason to harm you.”

Serena stopped listening for a minute and got a chill down her spine as she remembered the effect that the Dementor had on her. She remembered every bad memory she had ever had and shuddered at the thought.

“On a happier note,” continued Dumbledore, “I am pleased to welcome two new teachers to our ranks this year. First, Professor Lupin, who has kindly consented to fill the post of Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher.”

Some of the students applauded, and others didn’t. Serena noticed that Professor Lupin’s robes were torn and he looked like he had woken up on the wrong side of the bed.

“I wonder if he always looks like that, or if he’s just having a bad day,” mumbled Olivia.

“As to our second new appointment,” said Dumbledore. “Well, I am sorry to tell you that Professor Kettleburn, our Care of Magical Creatures teacher, retired at the end of last year in order to enjoy more time with his remaining limbs. However, I am delighted to say that his place will be filled by none other than Rubeus Hagrid.”

Most of the applause this time came from the Gryffindor table. Serena looked down the table and saw Draco Malfoy’s look of disgust and she couldn’t help but smile.

“Well I think that’s everything of importance,” said Dumbledore. “Let the feast begin!”

Suddenly the Great Hall was filled with talk and Serena dug in as the food magically appeared on the table. She was so hungry that she scarfed down three plates of food.

“Jeez, Rena,” said Maggie. “Did you parents feed you over the summer?”

“Shu’ up,” said Serena with her mouth full.

“Okay,” said Olivia as she turned to Maggie. “We need to hook you up with someone this year.”

“Wha – what do you mean?” asked Maggie.

“Well I have Miles and Serena has Oliver…you need a man,” said Olivia. Serena raised her eyebrows.

“Since when is this a concern of yours?” asked Maggie.
