Professor Lupin? Serena had to be sure that she had heard Olivia correctly.

“Lupin?” she asked.

“Yes,” said Olivia. “I don’t remember anything after that. It just goes black.”

“That would explain how he’s sneaking around the castle,” said Maggie. “If he’s got help on the inside then it’s easy.”

“I can’t believe it,” said Serena. “Lupin always seemed so nice. Why would he do that?”

“Should we go to Dumbledore?” asked Maggie.

“And say what? Hey professor, we just happen to know that Professor Lupin is helping Sirius Black into the castle even though we have no proof. They wouldn’t believe us,” said Serena.

“So what do we do then?” asked Olivia.

“We’re just going to have to pretend that nothing is wrong,” said Serena. “We can’t let Lupin know that we know or else something bad could happen. We’ll just keep going as if nothing is wrong until we figure something out.”

Serena looked out the window and saw the Black Lake sitting still. There wasn’t even a ripple in the water. The edge of the Forbidden Forest was in view and she felt a chill run down her spine.

“I guess we should try to get some sleep,” said Maggie as she slipped under the covers of her bed. Serena had no idea how she would get any sleep after what had just happened but she forced herself into a dreamless sleep.

The next morning, the three girls woke up to Blizzard hooting obnoxiously demanding his breakfast. He kept biting Serena’s fingers until she stumbled out of bed.

“Alright, alright!” said Serena. She slipped him a few treats before she slowly made her way to the shower.

“I didn’t sleep at all,” said Maggie as the three of them headed to the Great Hall for breakfast.

“Me either,” said Serena. “I was up half the night expecting Professor Lupin to burst into our room and kill us.”

“Oh stop it,” said Maggie. “He won’t kill us. If he wanted you dead he’s had plenty of opportunities all year to do it.”

The Great Hall was a buzz with Friday excitement. Serena only had two classes on Friday and it lifted her spirits a bit. She was going to have to catch up with Oliver and tell him everything that had happened last night. He was sitting at the Gryffindor table laughing with his teammates as usual. Serena took a seat at the Slytherin table and placed a piece of toast on her plate but didn’t eat it.

Serena cut her eyes over towards the staff table and noticed Professor Lupin chatting with Dumbledore. She felt sick to her stomach knowing that Dumbledore had no idea about what he was doing.

“You okay, Serena?” asked Oliver. He had sat down next to her and she didn’t even notice it. Olivia and Maggie were staring at her.

“I – uh – I need to talk to you,” said Serena. Oliver looked puzzled. “Not here. Meet me after first period.”

When the bell rang, Serena headed off to Charms with Maggie and Olivia. The three of them sat quietly and went the entire class without speaking. It was such an odd behavior for the three of them that Professor Flitwick made sure that everything was okay. When class was over, Serena said good-bye to Maggie and Olivia and headed off to find Oliver.

When she found Oliver, she told him everything she had found out last night. He was just as confused as she was and didn’t really know what to say.
