The weather began to get colder and Serena’s favorite time of the year was rolling in as October approached. Quidditch season was here at last. Serena had called a meeting Wednesday evening with the team to discuss the upcoming season. It was right after dinner and she walked down to the pitch with Carmelita trying to calm her nerves. Flint, Warrington and Montague were slowly walking behind them being obnoxious and trying to annoy Serena. She did her best to ignore it.
“Okay you lot, gather around,” said Serena. The sun was descending in the sky and she didn’t want it to get too dark.
“Why did you call this stupid meeting?” asked Malfoy. His arm was still in a sling from the accident he had in Care of Magical Creatures.
“So we can discuss tactics,” said Serena eyeing his sling. “Such as the state of your arm. When are you going to be okay to play?”
“Dunno,” said Malfoy as he gently patted his arm. “It could be awhile. That oaf is going to get sacked and his stupid Hippogriff will get his head chopped off. Father knows the Minister of Magic of course and he’s filing a report as we speak.”
“So you’re saying you won’t be ready by the Gryffindor game?” spat Serena.
“Probably not,” said Malfoy. Flint sniggered.
“Okay well I’ll figure out a way to work around that,” said Serena. “I’ve worked out all of our practices down to the minute. That means no messing around this year. We have to be serious. I know our chances of winning the cup last year were taken due to my injury and other unforeseen circumstances, but it’s ours this year. We have the best players in this school.”
“You aren’t going to go soft on us and let your boyfriend win the Quidditch Cup are you?” retorted Flint. Serena glared at him. Montague, Malfoy and Warrington laughed.
“No, but I can have you kicked off this team if you keep it up, Flint,” spat Serena.
“Yeah, shove off you prat,” said Carmelita. Serena was surprised that she spoke up like that.
“Anyway, we have it in the bag this year. This is the most talented team I’ve ever seen.”
Serena was right about that. Practice had never gone so well before even though it was pouring rain. She hardly had to tell anyone what to do. They all understood her drills and she finally felt like a Captain. People were listening to her and respecting her – even Marcus.
After the first practice, Serena hit the showers and was finally not the only girl in the locker room, which was a strange but nice feeling. She finally had someone to talk to.
“Are all practices that rough?” asked Carmelita. “I’m beat!”
Serena smiled. “Not all of them. But it’s going to be much more difficult this year.”
Carmelita sighed.
“Don’t worry,” said Serena. “I wouldn’t have picked you if I didn’t think you could do it.”
After Serena showered, she made her way back to the common room and flopped onto the couch next to Maggie and Olivia.
“Whatcha doin?” asked Serena. Maggie raised an eyebrow.
“Why are you so giddy?” she asked.
“Because practice was amazing!” exclaimed Serena. “This year is going to be perfect, I know it. I have the perfect team, perfect friends and a perfect boyfriend.”
“Someone call the nurse,” said Olivia as she placed her hand on Serena’s forehead. “This girl’s gone mad!”
Serena laughed and pushed Olivia off of her.
