The weeks following the Quidditch match were gorgeous. The sun was shining and all of the underclassmen were sitting outside by the lake drinking cold butterbeers and enjoying the sunshine while all of the upperclassmen were piled into the library with their stacks of books. Now that Quidditch was over for the season, Serena had time to study for NEWTs.
“I don’t even care about these stupid exams,” said Serena as she slammed shut her Charms book. She was still extremely depressed about losing the Quidditch Cup. Oliver was extremely careful to not bring it up around her. It was still a sensitive subject.
“Come on, just give it a few more hours,” said Oliver. “You need to at least pass.”
“What’s the point?” she asked glumly. Oliver stared at her wondering what he should say then he closed his book and moved closer to her.
“Do you want to talk?” he asked as he rubbed her back. She shook her head. “I think you’ll feel better if you tell me what’s wrong.”
Serena took a deep breath. “What if Amelia Grunewald changes her mind about me. I mean – I haven’t won the Quidditch Cup. I haven’t accomplished ANYTHING since becoming Captain of the Slytherin team and they’re looking for winners. What if they decide I’m not good enough?”
Oliver remembered that her appointment with Amelia Grunewald of the Holyhead Harpies was next weekend and now he understood why she was so nervous and not caring about her studies.
“I see what this is about,” he said as he made her turn to face him. “Serena – I’ve told you plenty of times – you’re a fantastic Quidditch player and you’re the best Captain that this school has seen in years.”
“If I was so good then we would have won the cup.”
“Winning isn’t everything my dear. If winning was everything then the Falmouth Falcons wouldn’t even have a team.” She giggled. “Okay yeah, you couldn’t pull together a team of cheaters and liars but that doesn’t change how determined you were to get where you are. You’re the only girl who’s been on the Slytherin team for centuries now and that’s saying something. You’ve got skills that I only dream about having. You’re so much more than you think you are Serena.”
Serena was beginning to feel better after talking to Oliver about this. He was always there to support her and she knew that he had a very good point.
“They’ve already asked you to discuss future plans with them,” he continued. “They’d be crazy not to want you.”
“Thanks,” Serena mumbled. She gave him a small smile and he stole a kiss from her lips. “So where does this leave us after we leave here?”
“What do you mean?”
“What if I’m offered a position with the Harpies? Where will you go?”
“I’d follow you anywhere love,” he said with a smile. “I’m absolutely crazy about you. I’m not letting you get away from me that easily. We can get a flat somewhere in Wales...or London...or anywhere.”
Serena couldn’t believe that Oliver Wood was talking to her about moving in together when they leave Hogwarts. She knew she was legally an adult, but she certainly didn’t feel like one.
“You’d really want to move in together after we leave here?” she asked.
“Why wouldn’t I?”
“I dunno…people always say you shouldn’t live together unless you’re married.”
Oliver looked a little taken aback. “Serena, you just don’t like to wait for things to happen, do you?”
