Shane looked horrified, her eyes welled with tears. "A what?" Her voice was weak and petrified. It struck straight into Dean's heart, making him remember the pain he felt when his mother died.
"A demon, Shane. They're-"
"I know what the hell a demon is. But..." Her eyes began to fill with tears, "why? Why my family?"
"We don't know." Dean finished. "But we're going to need your help to kill it."
Shane kept her eyes trained on the ground below her, motionless as a stone. A single tear fell to the sand by her feet.
"Can you really get rid of it?"
Dean stared at the little girl. She had looked so strong before. Now, she looked like a crumpled heap.
"Yeah. We can."
Sam interjected, "We can't kill it, but we can send it back where it came from. Permanantly."
"I had hoped you'd just say I was nuts, and that this whole thing was part of my imagination. I thought..." she looked up, "You promise me that you can send it back forever?"
Dean looked into the girls teary, blue eyes and nodded.
"I don't care what I have to do, or who I have to hurt, whatever. I want this thing gone, and I want it gone A.S.A.P." Shane bit her lip.
Just then, Shane's phone rang. She looked down, viciously wiped the tears from her eyes, and examined the screen, "Here," Shane croaked, holding her phone out to Sam, "you talk to Laura. She's going to be pissed."
Sam nodded and picked up the phone, "Hi Ms. Kendric. Yes, Shane is with us," Sam's voice died down as he walked away, leaving Dean and Shane alone in an awkward silence.
Shane sat on the swing set, staring at the sand, swinging back and forth like a leaf in the wind. Dean stood up from the bench he was sitting on and moved to sit on the swing beside the little girl. He shifted uncomfortably, attempting to get comfortable on the small 'seat.'
"Shane..." Dean paused, "I know this is hard but-"
"It's not. I knew something was going on. I knew... something...." Shane looked to the side, "I just hoped that all this time I'd been wrong," a strangled chuckle was heard in the awkward silence between the two, "You know, it's funny. I thought knowing would fell better. But now, knowing, I..." a muffled sob escaped her lips, "I don't know what I feel."
Dean looked down. "It's hard... losing someone you love." Shane met Dean's eyes. "But sometimes it's worse knowing things you didn't know. But Shane, I promise, we will find this thing and send it so far into hell, that the devil himself doesn't even know where to find him."
"Just let me help. I... need to help kill it.
I need revenge."
