The drive to the motel was silent. Only the purr of the engine could be heard amongst the three. The silence had set an aura around them, creating a rather uncomfortable atmosphere.
Sam had been pondering what Dean told him back at the house. It would make sense that the pentgram saved Shane's life and that the demon wanted to make sure there were no survivors. But the question still remained; how determined to kill Shane was this thing?
They pulled into the parking lot at the motel and stepped out of the car. Sam and Dean walked to the door of their room, Shane dragging behind them. She had a very painful and distant look in her eyes.
Dean unlocked the door and set his bag down on his bed.
"I'll go get the first aid kit," Sam looked at Dean who nodded in response and walked out of the room to the main office.
Shane looked around the room, taking in how empty it felt. She knew there were people 'living' here, but it felt... hollow.
"Kid," Dean's voice snapped her out of her daydreaming, "You can sit down. The chairs aren't possessed or anything."
Shane sat down on one of the two chairs around the table in the room and fingered her neckalce. Dean watched her for a moment, wondering what she was thinking before he got up and walked to the sink. Dean grabbed a small glass from the counter, which was provided for them by the motel, and filled it with cold water. He walked back toward Shane, sat down across from her, and handed her the glass.
"Thanks," Shane mumbled and took a small sip.
"You ok?" Dean asked concernedly.
"Yeah, I'm fine." Shane looked away from him and stared at the floor.
"You know, I wouldn't expect you to be fine right now. No one would. So if you're-"
"I'm fine."
Dean sighed. "No you're not, ok? I know. I know that look in your eyes, that tone of voice." Shane looked up at him, her eyebrows knitted together. "I know because it's the same look and tone I had after my mom died. You see, you and I, we've been through some similar stuff. So has Sammy. His girlfriend and our mom were both killed by a demon, the same demon actually. So don't fricking lie to me and tell me you're fine, cause we both know it's a lie. You've been pushing this away for years, and now it's back; the pain of losing your family, the fear of it all, and the feeling of utter helplessness. I know, ok?" Dean looked down. "I know."
"They didn't have anything to numb the pain, so it's going to hurt a little. But, it should't be too bad," Sam walked through the door just as Shane opened her mouth to speak. He set the small black box on the table in front of Shane and went to grab another chair.
"It's ok. I can take care of it," Shane looked up at him and tried a half smile, "Where's your bathroom?"
"Right over there," Sam pointed to the door by the kitchen counter, "You sure you don't want any help?"
"I'm sure. I'll be fine."
With that, Shane picked up the kit and walked into the bathroom.
"She's messed up," Dean mumbled.
"What?"
"I said she's messed up. What kid after something like that is totally fine?! None that I can think of!" Dean whisper-yelled.
"Dean," Sam lowered his voice and leaned closer to his brother, "She's been through worse before, remember? Maybe it's just not throwing her off as much as we think it is."
"I don't care. Something aint right."
"Right now we need to figure out a way to find this demon and get rid of it. That's our priority."
----
Shane stood in front of the bathroom mirror, dabbing a cotton ball dipped in hydrogen peroxide on her cuts.
Lauren's gonna kill me. She thought. If this demon thing doesn't get me first, that is. She pulled her necklace out from under her shirt and looked at it. Is this thing really protecting me? It this really why I'm not dead yet?
"You ok, Shanie?" Shane snapped back to reality at the sound of Dean's voice.
"Yeah, I'm fine," She opened the door and crossed her arms, "Don't call me Shanie."
Dean smirked. "Come on, we better get you home before your warden freaks out."
