Shane opened her eyes and sat up. She had been leaned against two pillows, positioned so they almost sat like a person. She smiled. She knew Dean had set it up before he'd left.
She placed her feet on the floor, and stumbled a little as she stood. She paused to look at herself in the mirror. She was cleaner than she expected and clothed in an oversized men's flannel shirt, her old dirty shirt still on beneath it. Sam or Dean are probably to blame for that. She thought. She heard faint voices from outside the door. She turned the handle and the voices stopped. The door opened to reveal Sam and Dean sitting on the curb outside the door, drinking beer and eating bags of vending machine chips.
"Hey, kid. You feelin' any better?" Dean smiled.
Shane nodded and walked to sit beside Sam.
"Are you hungry at all? Thirsty?" Sam asked caringly.
Shane nodded sheepishly and started rolling up the sleves of the green flannel shirt so the sleves no longer covered her hands. Dean reached over and handed her a bag of chips and a water bottle.
"What were you guys talking about," Shane asked as she ate one of the cheese-flavored chips.
"We were trying to figure out why that vending machine is busted. It hands out two of everything," Dean smiled, trying to lift Shane's spirits.
"Did you guys break it or something?"
"No we didn't," Sam chuckled, "But Dean wanted to."
"I only wanted it to give me the M&Ms. That was it!"
They all chuckled. Shane looked down and hugged her knees.
"Hey, Shane," Sam placed his hand on her shoulder, "you ok?"
Shane nodded and wiped a tear from her cheek. "I'm fine," she croaked.
"We think we figured out a way to catch this thing," Dean assured, "But we're going to need your help. Ok?"
"Yeah."
"Are you sure? This isn't exactly 100% safe."
"Don't care," Shane scowled, "If it takes this thing off the map, I'll do it. I just want this thing to stop hurting people."
Sam and Dean exchanged a worried glance.
"And it's not just revenge anymore. This...." Shane's voice trailed off, "This is different. The people this thing's hurt... they were good people. Good people. They didn't do anything wrong. They didn't deserve this. They just all had something to do with me. I've felt for a long time I should've died with my family. But this..."
"Kid, don't talk like that-" Dean interupted.
"No you don't understand," Shane's eyes darted from the pavement to look at Sam and Dean, "These people had nothing to do with me other than the fact I cared about them. And that got them killed. This thing wants me dead, fine. If it can catch me, it can have me. But it's going to go through hell first. It hurt people I loved. And..." she paused, "there are still people I care about that are alive right now and I don't exactly want that to change."
"We're planning on trapping that thing in the old house we were at. There's a way to make a demon powerless and we're going to use that to against that thing. We're going to need you to lure Lauren in to the trap so we can preform an exorcism," Dean calmly stated. "You're going to be the bait."
Shane looked down again and closed her eyes.
"Shane, are you sure you're ok with this?" Sam asked.
"I need to know people aren't going to get hurt anymore, Sam."
"We'll grab the stuff to set up. We leave in 20 minutes."
