This is a weird AU, so it's pretty much high school stereotype swapped. Shy and quiet Roman and popular and tough Virgil.

Virgil Gray was untouchable. Upon seeing him for the first time, you'd expect otherwise. He is very skinny and only wears black and purple. He doesn't look untouchable, and he also looks like a target for bullying.
He used to be.
He arrived at this high school in Sophomore year, two years ago. People assumed he's a easy target and the main group of boys made a bet. First one to make him cry gets $10 from the rest of the group.
The first boy decided verbal bullying was the way to go, and apparently also becoming a ten year old.
He found Virgil and cornered him one day, and he couldn't be bothered.
"Your moms gay." The boy tormented. People went 'ooo' and backed away, expecting Virgil to curl up in a ball and cry his eyes out.
Instead, he calmly responded with "which one?"
The bully was very angry at this point, he had never had someone respond to him like that.
He took another punch. "Well then, you're gay!" The boy yelled, very proud of himself for his 'killer' comeback.
His pride vanished when the smaller boy just went "Yes, and?"
That was the moment when Virgil Gray become infamous and untouchable. And that was the moment I fell in love with him.
Who am I? Well, I'm Roman McKnight, pleasure to meet you.

The day of April 11th started the way all others do, wake up, put on glasses, get dressed, eat, go to school.
We are in full swing for the school musical, Guys and Dolls.
Im on stage crew. Captain actually. I love acting and singing but I'm way too shy and self conscious to actually be in one, other than on stage crew.
"My lovely crew! Please gather around! We have a new member! Now, he is starting late so we need someone to show him around. Roman, you're the captain so I'm nominating you." Ms Berkley, the theater teacher. announced.
In walked the last person I expected on a stage.
Virgil freaking Gray.
We all went in separate directions. I went to my crush, this was my first time talking to him.
"Captain, huh? Are you like theater royalty?" Virgil grinned at me. Holy **** that grin.
"Not exactly. Im Roman." I stuck out my hand, before I could realize exactly how sweaty my hands were.
He shook my hand, probably disgusted by how wet my hand was.
"Virgil Gray. It's nice to meet you, Prince." He laughed.
"You're really going with this royalty thing, aren't you?" I asked as we started walking.
"So, this is backstage?" He asked once we walked around a bit more.
"Yeah. Or as everyone here calls it, home. Well, you are pretty late to stage crew for this musical so I guess we can find something for you..." I said.
"Hey! I could be your assistant if you need one! You are royalty, so that might make you a little stressed." He offered.
This means he's with me the whole time. My crush. Oh my god.
"Yeah! Actually that would be great! Well, let's keep going with the tour."
I showed him everything, the entire theater, everywhere we go and, of course, our vending machine.
Soon enough, school was over. And that meant actors.
The actors flooded into the theater. We are so close to finishing the set. We just need some more signs, pews and another wall but we're going fine on time.
I look at the actors. I've always been envious of these people. They're outgoing and confident enough for this. I wish I was like this.
"Alright. Here's where it gets a bit more interesting. Welcome to rehearsal!" I exclaimed to Virgil.
"Wow. So, all of the actors come in and we pretty much run through it like the real performance?" He asked.
"Not exactly. We add in the elements we've figured out since last rehearsal and let the actors do their thing. Every day after school is this group. Every other day the actors come in. Well, until tech week where we have to stay til midnight. Yeah, it's bad but we do get excused tardies so that's nice." I explain.
"My god. Midnight? That sounds like a loopy disaster." Virgil laughs.
Holy sh** his laugh is adorable.
I laugh too and suddenly get self conscious. Is my hair okay? Is my laugh to weird? Am I fat?
Stupid voices in my head.
"So, im captain so I just help people out with whatever they need so you can just help me for a few days and when you find what you like most, you can join them." I tell Virgil.
He looks at me and smiles.
Shoot. I must sound so idiotic. He probably pities me.
"Alright. What does Mr Captain do on a normal day?" Virgil asks, as if he's interviewing me. I must say, it's hilarious and adorable.
Im falling deeper in love and this is an issue. He'd never like me back.
"I pretty much manage things and help out wherever I'm needed." I say, realizing how boring my job can get.
"So, being captain is practically like being a stage manager?" He asks. Wow, this boy actually knows his stuff.
"Yeah, pretty much." I respond, realizing that that's actually a pretty good way of describing my job.
"Roman! We need you!" Dakota suddenly yells. Dakota is a genius when it comes to makeup. She's absolutely fabulous at it.
Virgil and I jog over to the makeshift vanities.
"I can't decide what to do for Adelaides makeup. Either simple eyes with a bright red lip or a reddish Smokey eye and pink lips. They both look good with the dress." She asks.
I really have no idea about makeup.
"What color is the dress, exactly?" Virgil asks. ???
"It's red, with white polka dots. Do I know you?" Was Dakota's answer.
"No. Im new. But with a red dress, I'd say go with the red lips, more of a pop I guess. But for the eyes, do a super simple Smokey eye with nude colors. It will look great with her wig too." He says, and he knows exactly what he's talking about.
"Thanks, im Dakota by the way." Dakota looks very relieved that she's figuring out the makeup.
"Virgil. It was nice meeting you." Virgil smiles and we walk away.
"How did you know all that? I had no idea what you guys were saying." I admit.
"I love makeup, actually." Virgil blushes.

Weeks pass and the show becomes closer. One afternoon in particular, I have off period last. I go to the theater alone and sing.
I sing the first thing that comes to mind, Fight For Me from Heathers.
"And could you fight for me
Hey, could you face the crowd
Could you be seen with me and still act proud
Hey, could you hold my hand
And could you carry me through no man's land
It's fine if you don't agree
But I would fight for you
If you would fight for me." The song reminds me of Virgil.
Speak of the devil, while I'm singing I'm totally distracted.
Until I hear the door open.
Virgil Gray.
"You have an amazing voice. You should really be an actor. You have the talent." He smiles.
"You have no idea, Virgil. Im too shy and nervous, but I guess you'd have no idea about that." I respond, sassier than I intended.
"That's supposed to be a joke, right?" He responds, his smile fading.
"What?"
"When I was a freshman, I was bullied to the point where I was suicidal. I was this lonely, friendless boy with self inflicted scars up his arms. When I was ten, I was diagnosed with a anxiety disorder. When I was in seventh grade, I was diagnosed with depression. So yes, I do know how it feels." He says, voice cracking.
I had no idea.
He walks over to the stage where I'm sitting and we talk until theater begins.

We steadily become friends over the next few weeks.
But one day in particular I will always remember.
Im sitting backstage, on one of the squishy denim couches.
In walks a very anxious looking Virgil with flowers. He's probably giving them to Ms Berkeley.
But he walks up to me.
"Hey Roman. When I first came here, I thought you were adorable with your sweater vests and bright red plastic glasses. But over the past few weeks, the feelings I have for you have become more than skin deep. I love your smile, your laugh, your humor, your personality in general. And I know I'm probably way out of line and I'm setting myself up for heartbreak but I was wondering if maybe you wanted to go out sometime?" He half rambles.
Im speechless. I must be dreaming.
But if this is a dream, don't wake me.
Im at a loss for words. All I can do is kiss him. So I do.
Its perfect. Gentle and tender and sweet. The kiss lasts the perfect amount of time.
"In case I wasn't being clear, that's a yes." Is all I can say before kissing him again.

A few months later
Im walking into the cafeteria for lunch when a popular bully corners me.
"You're gay." He spits, and for some reason, I feel like crying.
Im not out yet. Im planning on coming out but I just haven't.
Im stuck. I can't deny or confirm or escape. I want to say I am gay so badly. Im tired of hiding. I almost say I am but someone does it before I can.
"Well, I sure hope he's gay because he's my boyfriend. If he was straight that would be pretty bad." My savior. My boyfriend. People back away, letting me get to my boyfriend. And I'm out. I've never felt better. I hold hands with Virgil and we brave the storm that is the cafeteria.
We sit down at a table together when two boys in glasses walk up to us, barely holding hands.
"This might be really weird but I just wanted to tell you that I think you guys are really brave. Up until now, I thought we were the only ones." The boy in light blue blushes. We know exactly what he's saying. He thought they were the only gay couple in school. Surprise.
"Love. You didn't even introduce yourself. Excuse my crazy boyfriend. His name is Patton. Im Logan."
