A/N The song is House of Gold by Twenty One Pilots (yes, I am aware that this story takes place in 2010 and the song is from 2012, but I'm gonna pretend like it's several years old in the story. If you've got a problem with that, suck it up.) Italics are lyrics.
Apollo sat in the cave, listening to his favorite song. Artemis has her earbuds in, too, Wally and Robin were playing a video game, Conner was looking bored and confused as he "helped" M'gann make cookies. Kaldur was just observing.
"What're you listening to?" Apollo suddenly heard Wally ask. Apollo took out his earbuds.
"House of Gold."
"That Twenty One Pilots song? I love that song!"
"I've never heard it," Robin admitted.
"I have never heard it either," Said Kaldur. M'gann and Conner both said that they had never heard the song, either.
"What are you guys even talking about?" Artemis asked in annoyance, taking out one of her earbuds.
"House of Gold," Wally said.
Artemis groaned. "That song? I've heard it a million times. It's been Polly's favorite song forever."
Apollo rolled his eyes at his twin. "A) don't call me Polly. B) part of the reason that you hear it all the time is because Vessel is one of your favorite albums."
"True."
"Stop bickering with your sister and play the stinkin' song!" Wally exclaimed.
Apollo laughed and rewinded it to the beginning.
She asked me, son, when I grow old
Will you buy me a house of gold?
And when your father turns to stone
Will you take care of me?
She asked me, son, when I grow old
Will you buy me a house of gold?
And when your father turns to stone
Will you take care of me?
I will make you
Queen of everything you see
I'll put you on the map
I'll cure you of disease
Let's say we up and left this town
And turned our future upside-down
We'll make pretend that you and me
Lived ever after happily
She asked me, son, when I grow old
Will you buy me a house of gold?
And when your father turns to stone
Will you take care of me?
I will make you
Queen of everything you see
I'll put you on the map
I'll cure you of disease
Oh, and since we know that dreams are dead
And life turns plans up on their head
I will plan to be a bum
So I just might become someone
She asked me, son, when I grow old
Will you buy me a house of gold?
And when your father turns to stone
Will you take care of me?
I will make you
Queen of everything you see
I'll put you on the map
I'll cure you of disease
"That's a cute song!" Megan said.
Apollo smiled. "It reminds me of me and my mom. I love her so much. More than my brother and sisters combined, I think."
Artemis rolled her eyes. "So not true. But you are her favorite."
"Now, that's true."
"How does it remind you of you and your mom's relationship? Not to pry or anything," Wally inquired.
"Well, I used to just like it because it was sweet. But now it suits our situation pretty well. I'd do anything for my mom. There was an accident a few years back that left her paralyzed from the waist down, she's older, she's 48, and my dad left in June. She's also unemployed and usually stays home all day. My siblings and I take turns taking care of her. I basically do everything that she wants."
"You spoil her," Artemis said.
"Says the one who sass talks her 98% of the time. You're the reason she need pampering. She's got enough to deal with with you and your sassy self. Andy, Jade, and I don't need to contribute any further."
"But Jade's sassy, too! Plus, Mom is where we get it from!" Artemis said, laughing.
Apollo laughed too. "Fair point."
"Just how much sass does your mom have?"
Robin asked.
"Enough to out-sass both of my sisters."
"Dang."
"No kidding."
Apollo laughed. "She's also one of the handful of people that won't take Artemis' crap. If Art's being ridiculous, she'll get scolded for it. That does not happen with Dinah and Ollie, who treat Artemis like she's the second coming of Christ or something."
"We're Buddhist, Apollo. Remember?" Artemis told her brother.
"I think you and our siblings are more atheist than buddhist."
"True. But you and Mom are buddhist."
"That doesn't mean that I'm not allowed to say Christian-related expressions. You say Jesus Christ all the time."
"Point taken."
"Well, that was a topic change," Robin said, making everyone laugh.
"Your poor mother," M'gann said.
"She's fine. She's adjusted to the chair and staying at home by now." Apollo said.
"No, I meant having to deal with Artemis. I mean, I love you Arty, but you're something else."
Everyone laughed at Megan's comment. Artemis said, "I know. I drive Mom crazy. She's always glad when it's not my turn to take care of her. I guess my awesomeness is just too much for some people to handle."
"My gosh, Art, really?" Apollo said. "I don't think awesomeness is the problem. I think your problem is that you're crazy." Artemis simply shrugged.
Apollo's phone rang. "Oh hey, Mom," He started then continued in Vietnamese.
"What's up?" Wally asked after Apollo hung up.
"Mom needs me and Artemis at home. We'll see you guys later."
"Ok," Megan said. "Bye, guys!"
"Bye," The twins said and ran to the Zetas.
