song of the chapter:
honey ~ kučka32 hours. that's how long taeyong has gone without closing his eyes. it was his first official shift being "on call" and he could 100% agree that it was the shittiest thing in existence. but then again, he couldn't complain because being on call a friday night in the emergency room was a beautiful dream, or as beautiful as broken bones and blood could be.
he still hadn't even gotten a chance to look at the surgical room, let alone perform any extraordinary surgeries. this surgery thing wasn't exactly as easy as he thought it was going to be.
taeyong slumped down onto a chair for the first time in his shift, in the now relatively empty emergency room. he took a sip of his coffee that was now cold, immediately cringing and tossing it into the trash can under the desk.
finally, a moment to relax. his feet felt like they were about to fall off and the rest of his body wasn't in too good of shape either.
*beep beep, beep, beep*
seriously? he just sat down, couldn't he have even five minutes? taeyong looked down at his pager, immediately jumping from the comfortable chair at the sight of the 911 written across in small writing.
"fuck. fuck. fuck. fuck. hyunah is dead or dying. what was he going to do? how did this happen? she was getting stable. he had been monitoring her for a week and she was getting better." taeyong thought, as he raced up the stairs to the floor where hyunah's room was.
the moment he walked through the stairwell doors, he saw the rush of nurses running in and out of hyunah's room, a crash cart being ran in by a young female nurse. he swore that his heart stopped when he heard the wheels screech at the speed it was being pushed.
taeyong pushed through the people, head spinning, adrenaline coursing through this body, but unable to react to the situation. there on the bed was hyunah having a full blown seizure, eyes rolled back into her head and her body shaking vigorously. her lips were blue and coated with a foamy saliva spewing out in every direction.
"dr. lee, tells us what you want us to to do. she's pumped full of diazapam, what's the plan?" a male nurse shouted, taeyong not moving a centimeter from where he was frozen still.
"dr. lee! are you listening to us? she's dying, you need to make a decision now!" the nurse shouted again, but taeyong remained frozen, snapping into action a few seconds later.
"somebody page dr. jung and the rest of the team immediately!" taeyong yelled, quickly examining her chart for anything of relevance.
"dr. lee, they won't get here fast enough, you need to make a choice now or she's dead for sure. step up, doctor." the nurse responded, seeing hyunah turn dark blue as a result of lack of oxygen.
and then, taeyong saw hyunah's veins turn bright black.
overdose. heroin. his sister. she was having an overdose, not a seizure. it all made sense now. her overdosing came in spurts through withdrawal and taeyong knew exactly what drug did that. it was a type of heroin, that carried traces of an elephant tranquilizer.
"pump her with 10 mg of midazolam and phenobarbital, and i don't care page them again. she's not having a seizure, she's having an overdose." taeyong answered, positive of his diagnosis.
