After a two hour lecture and an hour of interrogation, leaving out the getting drunk and kissing a teacher, I was finally free. She still made me sit in the living room with her because I was grounded and she found joy in punishing me. I really wanted to go and talk to Tristan.
“Scarlett, Harmony called around,” she said seriously, setting down her book and glasses. “She expressed her concerns about you.”
Of course she did. As if I couldn’t feel anymore crap about myself, Harmony had to go and outdo herself. “Really? I bet she was so concerned, all right.”
“She was.”
“She’s majoring in drama, Mum. It’s all an act,” I silently begged her to be with me on this one but she wasn’t.
“Even so, it doesn’t change the fact that what she told me was true. I hear you’ve been going out with a boy just to make the other jealous as they’re best friends? Playing them off against each other for your own amusement? Being late for class and getting two weeks detention and then getting one of the boys to take half the blame? What’s gotten into you lately? I hardly recognise you. And don’t pretend to me that you weren’t drinking last night, it’s pretty clear when you came home a wreck, in a t-shirt and underpants,” she lectured. I clenched my fists – I was going to kill Harmony. I couldn’t describe my anger towards her.
“I am dating Tristan, yes. But I have no intention of dating Chase. I don’t even like him! I don’t pretend to like him. Harmony likes Chase and so she’s just jealous because he’s been hanging out with me as friends! It’s all lies, Mum, can’t you believe me?” I looked her in the eyes, pleading. But she broke our gaze and shook her head.
“I don’t know what to believe anymore. All I know is that you are not to see Chase again, do you hear me?” with that, I was on my feet and storming out of the room.
“You are so lame and unfair!” I screamed and stomped up to my room.
She couldn’t stop me from seeing Chase. His window was opposite mine, but she didn’t need to know that. He was sitting in his room on the PlayStation and looked up as I entered my room and shut the door tight, locking it. Thank gosh I had convinced Mum to get me a lock on my door after an awkward experience with Liam walking in on me changing.
“Hello love,” he grinned and headed over to the window, blue eyes sparkling.
“I’m not allowed to see you anymore,” I said sadly. I don’t know why it made me sad though. I guess I was just going to miss having him as a friend. Not that I was planning on obeying Mum.
“What? Why?” he frowned, crossing his arms on the windowpane.
“Harmony told my Mum all this stuff about me turning Tristan and you against each other and whatever. It’s bull but Mum’s forbade me from seeing you. But don’t worry, I’m not gonna listen to her,” I shrugged.
“Maybe you should,” he looked down and avoided my gaze.
“What?”
“I mean, I don’t want you disobeying your mum and getting into trouble for me,” he murmured. “I should go anyway.”
I stared at him, gobsmacked as he shut his bedroom window and drew the curtains. Had that just happened or was I dreaming? I stared at the curtain, tears prickling in my eyes. Why was I so upset? I still had Tristan and Zee, even if Chase wasn’t speaking to me. He was a jerk anyway, I should count myself lucky.
I turned my stereo up full-blast and listened to TwentyForSeven but Chase started playing his stereo louder just to annoy me. I cranked it up a little followed by his thumping music getting even louder. I turned my volume on full volume and he did the same. Then, at the same time, both our mothers screamed at the top of their voices to turn it down and they both went down.
