As it turns out, everyone carpooled with Zee anyway. Tristan jogged out and knocked on my door. I was wearing dark skinny jeans, a short floaty white top with beads for straps and white pumps. My hair was simply straightened and my makeup was the same as it was every day. Zee was in the driver’s seat, Tristan in the passenger seat and Chase and I lounging in the back seat.

I pulled out my phone and plugged my earbuds in. I offered one to Chase and he happily took it. I bopped my head and Chase tapped his foot. “You know I’ve never met a girl with good music taste. The pop charts crap doesn’t do it for me.”

I chuckled, “I’m not just any girl.”

“No, you’re something else,” he smiled softly. I blushed and looked away, embarrassed.

Tristan and Zee turned on the radio and indie music blasted through it at high volume. Chase and I groaned simultaneously which was followed by laughter. Zee handed Tristan a bottle of alcohol, who took a large swig from it and passed it to Chase who took another large swig of it who passed it to me. I stared at the bottle and sniffed it carefully.

“Come on, loosen up for one night,” Chase prompted me. “I promise you, it’ll just take the edge of things. There’s only a little bit left in the bottle. Live a little!” I gripped the bottle. God help me. Here we go. I lifted it to my mouth and downed the rest of the amber liquid. It burnt down my throat and I winced.

The three of them cheered and did little dances in their seats. They weren’t as cool as they let on. I started to laugh and immediately felt a little bit of a buzz. Chase was right – it just took the edge of things.

Zee pulled outside a large house that seemed identical to the one that had held the last party I attended. People were vomiting on the lawn, fairy lights strung around and drunken people spilling down the steps. Now that I think about it, every house on that block looked identical.

“Tristan, Chase, Zee!” a heard a guy yell. I spun around to see a handsome older guy rushing towards us with open arms. He man hugged each one of them and stopped at me, lifting my hand and kissed it. “And who is this beauty?”

“Scarlett. I’m Tristan’s girlfriend,” I smiled politely, glancing at the guys.

“Tristan, you scored this chick as your girlfriend? That’s my man!” he high fived Tristan obviously. “My name’s Calvin.”

“Hey. So how do you know them?” I pointed to the others.

They were mulling around, hitting each other and laughing. They weren’t listening to a word we were saying. “Oh, those idiots? We all go way back! I graduated two years ago. But I don’t remember you. I don’t know how I don’t remember a pretty face like yours.” My god, he was flirting with me.

“Well, I’m sorry but I don’t exactly remember you either,” I shrugged.

“You don’t remember me?” he looked baffled.

“Sorry,” I pursed my lips and shrugged again. “Listen, I better get back inside with them before they break something or someone.”

“Okay, well I’ll catch you later and then I’ll buy you a drink,” Calvin grinned and gave me a half hug.

“That would be nice except the drinks are free, dummy,” I shook my head and walked away, dragging Tristan’s arm after me. He slung an arm around me and started kissing my cheek. “Tristan, we’re not even inside yet.”
