The night is cold and black; the rain falls with a hiss; the wind smacks my face and the rain falls like a million daggers wanting to pierce my skin as I ran, their screams behind me like banshees, but I keep running. I knew that I made a grave mistake, yet I can’t go back, my terrible sins cannot be undone.
The forest was ahead of me, I stopped and squinted, the twigs, like skinny arms, waiting to claw and rip me into pieces, the trunks loomed ominously above me then I looked back, and the screams were getting louder and clearer, “KILL!!” My legs weren’t moving, they were rooted to the ground “SACRIFICE!” then as my blood coursed through me with fear. I found the strength to keep going. My legs were moving, I used my fears. Feeling strong, I ran through the forest swift as the wind while the twigs scraped at my skin producing cuts and scratches. The forest that was once so alive now filled with darkness and hatred.
The wind caressed my face as I stood up to catch my breath; my heart was thumping wildly like a jack hammer.
Silence. The screams were gone. I felt a wave of relief sweep over me and I slumped to the ground, missing the feeling of my warm welcoming bed. I journeyed through the forest looking for shelter and food I found a rabbit, skinned it, cooked it and ate it. I went to find sticks, I only had my bag that I somehow grabbed with all the commotion. I came back to my shelter and thought of a plan.
I need to find a town to find work, but they won’t accept me because I am girl, I need to be a boy, but I don’t have any clothes…unless my bag has some. I rummaged through my bag I was lucky I grabbed my bag when I heard the commotion outside; I looked in my bag and found fresh hunters clothes, scissors and a mirror. "I have no idea how I got these, but I am not complaining at least I have new clothes to wear instead of worn up baggy trousers and a ripped-up shirt".
Perfect, I cut my dark raven hair with a red streak short and I changed my clothes. I put my old tattered clothes on the floor and used them as a cushioning. I went to get some sticks, I took a closer look at the forest, the trees that sheltered so many with their spreading canopy of green and provided so much were lifeless sticks of charcoal. My legs were bruised and aching, pleading to rest so I trudged back to my shelter of sticks and leaves and collapsed to the floor, my eye lids were getting heavier, so I surrendered to the exhaustion and slept peacefully waiting for dawn to rise once again.
My eyes flickered as the sun unveiled the world from the blanket of the night sky, daylight wriggled into my eyes, they stung and started to water but it was home sickness that triggered the silent, heart-felt tears. My walls, the walls that held me up, kept me strong.... collapsed. Brick by brick they fell, crumbling to nothing. I can’t escape my fears or hide from them; they were the worst kind of monster.
