III.

Reed ducked under the yellow tape and scanned the room for the reporting officer. His eyes fell on Officer Miller. He strode quickly over just as Nines was ducking under the tape.

"Chris!" exclaimed Reed. He was hoping that the cafe was just the place of the crime.

Miller turned around.

"Hey, you made it."

"Yeah yeah yeah, what the hell happened here?" There was no time for small talk. Nines had joined Reed at his side and was already surveying the scene. Miller put a hand on his hip and gestured around with the other.

"There was a break in last night. Probably wanted to loot the place. I guess whoever it was didn't expect the owner to still be here."

"So, what you're saying-" Reed was cut off by Miller nodding sadly.

"We found the owner in the back," the officer started. Nines began to head to the back half of the cafe as Miller continued, "but you and Nines should probably comb over the place before we really start jumping to conclusions." Reed nodded. He better make absolutely certain.

He met Nines in the back of the shop, just in front of the doors to the small kitchen. A body lay on the ground. It was, in fact, High Tree Lonz's owner. Gavin felt his world collapse.

"Oh my god." He croaked, trying to tear his eyes off of the body that lay in a pool of dark red blood. Nines was wondering around, analyzing each piece of evidence.

"What? You've seen worse." said the android coolly. Reed's eyes snapped to the lanky figure of his compatriot.

"I'll never have that cornbread again." Nines' back was to the distraught detective, so his eye rolling went unnoticed, which was probably for the best.
