II.

A chilly April breeze slipped around the two men as they walked down the barren sidewalk. The sun had barely begun to lace the sky with golden strands of light and Gavin Reed was not enjoying any of it. His high from remembering the cornbread had been swept away by the breeze. He curled his hands into fists and shoved them deeper into his jacket pockets. The android walking beside him showed no signs of discomfort, as usual.

"It's too damn early." grumbled Reed. He knew this complaint would only get a snarky remark from the deviated android.
"I'm sorry, Detective. If I had known you were going to be in such a bad mood this morning, I would've asked crime to stop until you were ready."

Reed looked up in time to see a smug look fading from Nines' face. He decided that retaliating would be too much of an effort, so he simply looked away from the android. They walked in silence for a while. The number of cars on the street next to them gradually began to increase as the city of Detroit woke up. After a pair of joggers passed the detective and his android, Nines spoke up.

"So, where did you have the cornbread?"

Reed looked up from watching his shoes.

"Oh uh, just a small cafe a couple of blocks away from the precinct. It's called High Tree Lonz." he replied, still lightly salted from the android's previous comment. The android frowned a little and did not respond. Reed ignored this. Maybe after they went to the crime scene, he'd be able to go over and grab a coffee before it got too crowded. This thought gave the detective something to look forward to and he perked up slightly.

It took them roughly five more minutes of walking to get to the scene of the crime. They were in the heart of Detroit and the city had livened up by this point. However, as they got closer, Reed began to recognize his surroundings. In fact, he could see the precinct down the street. His footsteps faltered slightly, causing Nines to look back at him.

"What is it?"

"Who was killed?"

Nines didn't answer. He merely turned to look up the street. This was answer enough for the detective though. He saw the sign of High Tree Lonz and the police tape that blocked off it's entrance.

The detective sprinted ahead, Nines walking calmly behind him.
