Like a good hostess, Sophia ushered him around and introduced him to everyone, including a dozen or more cadre members. He was truly amazed at the trust everyone showed him as they talked. Most of them even politely shielded their magic, as he was doing with his power, so neither of them felt uncomfortable. True some initiates didn't seem to like demons very much. But no one tried to hide what they did for the cadre.
Sophia didn't put a stop to a single one of his questions.
Had these people never heard of spies? Demons like him lied and cheated. That's what demons did. How did they know he wouldn't run straight to the Grigori with all this juicy inside information?
He could only think that after five-hundred years of the cadre not being breached, they must have let down their guard. Not at all smart. If he really were a spy, it could all be over for the order of the cadre. He could literally open up rhetorical gates of Hell over them.
Good thing he had no intention of doing so.
He sighed. How obnoxious was that? A perfect chance to give the dark realm a leg up on humanity, and he couldn't do it. What was wrong with him?
Damn, this new conscience thing was really becoming bothersome. He'd have to do something extra dastardly to Elise, just to prove to himself at least that he was still a real demon.
Looking at Sophia, all he wanted to do was touch her. But he didn't. He couldn't. Because if he did, he had a horrible feeling he would take her into his arms and never put her down. Stand here in front of everyone and demand that her father relinquish his daughter to him. As his mate. Forever.
Good God.
Was it his imagination, or was the room suddenly getting a whole lot colder.
"The celebration was a success," Sophia's father had declared after the last guest had departed for the east wing or back to their homes off the estate.
Sophia stifled a yawn.
"Tired?" Elvis asked.
She sent him a soft smile. "Very long day. Lots of excitement."
"I doubt I will be able to sleep at all," her father said, "think I'll just take the Demon stone back to my office and study it a little." He extended his hand to Elvis and shook it heartily. "Thank you again, Mr Presley. Fulfilled a lifelong dream for me today, I may never be able to repay you."
"My pleasure, sir."
With that he went off, Charles in tow carrying the stone.
"Powerful man, your father," Elvis said, thoughtfully watching his triumphant exit from the room.
Sophia wondered what he meant, but Aurora said pointedly, "Yes, he is. I wouldn't forget that if I was you."
Elvis sent Sophia's sister a calm glance. "It must run in the family. I can feel your magic, too, Aurora. Very impressive."
"What a mess," Sophia interjected, changing the subject before the two of them stared testing spells on each other. She glanced around the room. "We'd better leave something extra special for the house brownie tonight. Wouldn't do to find the furniture nailed to the ceiling in the morning."
Elvis chuckled. "I think Charles already took care of it. He brought those in a few minutes ago." He pointed to a stack of books sitting on the center table where the demon stone had been earlier.
"How thoughtful," Aurora said. "Well, then. Shall I walk you both to your rooms?"
Her sister was persistent, Sophia had to give her that. She kept a close eye on her and Elvis all night. No way would she leave them alone together for even a minute. She supposed it was sweet in a way, her protectiveness. But also very annoying. Sophia was a grown woman, capable of making her own decisions. If she desired to have a romantic interlude with Elvis, it was her body and her heart.
Her sister had absolutely no right to interfere.
Hope you enjoyed this chapter! And thank you so much for reading! xoxo
