Shock swept across Sophia's face. "You? But- Why are you telling me this?"

"I'm not going to do it, Sophia. I won't betray your trust."

"Too late," She said. Her body uncurled and she reached for the telephone. "I have to tell Aurora about this so she can warn the High council."

"Tell her in the morning. I've not to meet Rofocale until tomorrow night."

Her hand hesitated as she weighed whether to trust him. Before she could decided against him, he slipped into the bed and put his arms around her stiff, unyielding body. He pulled her wavering hand back to her side.

"What are you doing, Elvis?"

"I only want to hold you In my arms tonight." He pulled her against his chest. "I won't even kiss you if you don't want me to."

Suddenly, her Shields came down, and he was inundated with a whole new set of emotions. Hurt. Betrayal. Distress. Anguish. He groaned under the onslaught of pain, reeling with it. He tightened his arms around her, letting her feel his regret. His repentance. His profound need for her to understand. His profound need for her.

Her eyes sought his, wide and filled with cautious astonishment. She still didn't trust him. Who could blame her?

"It's all true," he said, trailing his fingers over her cheek. "I don't know how it is even possible, but you were right. I do have feelings for you."

"Oh, Elvis. Why did you do it, then? Why lie to me? Why hurt those people?"

"You summoned me, baby. It was your own wish for vengeance I fulfilled. I lied because it was the best way to do my job. To grant your greatest desire."

"But revenge isn't my greatest desire."

He gave her a bleak smile. "No longer, Maybe."

"No! I didn't want Elise to be caught forever in the borderlands! I didn't want Marta to have drunken sex with Dr. Cornell. That would be awful of me!"

"That's why they are called dark desires, honey. It's the role of demons to illuminate the dark side of humanity."

He felt a wave of profound guilt run through her, like a ghost walking through her body.

"But Elvis, you can't judge a person by their hidden thoughts, that's not fair."

"Why not? If you're thinking about vengeance you must want it."

She shook her head. "I would never in a million years have hurt those people, even if I sometimes fantasised about it. A person's mind is like a safety valve. You can imagine all sorts of things, but your conscience prevents you from acting in a way you know isn't right."

"But then...how is one to judge a person?"

"By their words and actions. What they actually do."

Looking into her eyes, he thought about what she said for a long, long time. It was as if a light had turned on somewhere deep in his soul. Finally he understood. "If a person really does take revenge on another, he deserves his punishment. But not for just thinking about it."

She touched his hand. "A fine distinction, but an important one. Elvis, you have to stop doing this. No more revenge. Promise me!"

He nodded, closing his eyes so she wouldn't see the true finality in them. "No more. I swear. I'll be gone tomorrow."

Sophia sucked in a sharp breath of suprise. "No, but- you have to stay," her voice wavering.

"It's just not possible, baby," he said. "I have to....go." His heart felt as though it was burning to an ashy cinder in his chest. There was nothing he wanted more than to stay with this amazing girl. To live his days learning from her gently wisdom and to spend his nights learning her soft curves.

He would give anything in this world, give up everything he had, everything he was, to be with her. Unfortunately, the world was not his to give. And after tomorrow he would have nothing left to give up.

But Sophia would be safe. And he would not longer have to hurt anyone. Especially her.

One way or another, tomorrow it would all be over.
