Demons weren't the only ones that could lie. Because Sophia just told a whopper.
Trust him? Not likely.
But at this moment she saw little option but to obey. For whatever reason, he wanted her in his penthouse. She silently visualised her protection circle and hoped for the best. She couldn't understand why it never seemed to work against him...
The look Elvis gave her as he pushed the elevators call button unnerved her. Dark, edgy, ominous. Despite his reassurance, she was certain something was about to happen. She knew better than to willingly go to a demon's abode. She knew better.
His magic would be far more powerful where he lived, and he'd have countermeasures in place to render her mind shield and protection spells totally useless.
She should be fighting him. It was a supreme mystery why she wasn't.
Stepping into the elevator she suddenly felt lightheaded, and stumbled. He caught her, holding her in his strong arms. His hot energy tightened around her insides, coiling into her center like a glowing steel spring.
She forced herself to shut out the sizzling feeling and concentrated on her surroundings.
Elvis didn't say a word. just held her close to his chest, the sure, steady beat of his heart thudding against her breasts, the collar of his coat rubbing her jaw. His subtle, distinctive scent teased her senses. The spice of his skin and the feel of his hard body pressing against hers flooded through her, reminding her all too vividly what that body was capable of.
The allure of him was too powerful. She subconsciously wrapped her arms around his neck, putting her nose to the warm skin of his throat. It was unsettling how much she wanted him, in spite of her uncertainties about him and his true reason for wanting her.
Had he already worked his potent magic on her? bewitched her so thoroughly she saw only the man she desperately desired, and not the demon within?
As a cadre tracker, she'd seen for herself what inner chaos one of his kind could wreck on the unsuspecting or naive. Sophia was neither. She was strong, and more knowledgeable of his ways. It was true, no normal woman was immune to the charms of an incubus. He could work his way into her mind, change her perceptions, convince her she was in love with him. After that, she'd do anything for him. With him. While he used her to his own purpose, and then discarded her.
Sophia had seen it time and time again while working for the cadre. But she she knew how to resist such charms. She'd done it before and would do it again. But this...this wasn't like that.
Why did this relationship with Elvis feel so different? So real....? It left her reeling, uncertain of anything.
They took the elevator all the way to the top floor. He swept her off her feet and walked out with her, barley slowing as the door to his suite flew open by itself. He walked inside and shut it behind them.
Inside, the air felt warm and electric as it pressed in on them, charged with power. Hot, otherworldly energy spilled over her, seeping through her body, filling her lungs so she absorbed it into her blood. Her heartbeat took off. What had she gotten herself into?
He let her down gently, holding her around the waist until she found her feet. As he let her go, the energy stopped, as If somehow it switched off. Leaning in relief against the coolness of the door, she watched him take off his coat and hang it.
"Good thing you're not into symbolism," he remarked, breaking the crackling silence as he turned to her. Her body welcomed his with a sigh as he pressed its towering hardness against her. A sharp tension tightened between them.
"Who says I'm not?" She answered, the words barely a whisper. His shirt smelled faintly of his exotic scent.
"I do." He gripped her jaw in his hand and lifted her face, covering her mouth with his. As though he had all the time in the world, he parted her lips with his tongue and sank it deep into the sensitive recesses of her mouth. Exploring. Tempting. His kiss was hypnotic. Drugging. Filling her with an overpowering need to merge her body with his. She should stop him. Now. But she couldn't. The more he kissed her, the more she wanted. She wanted...more.
When he slid off her coat she stepped out of her shoes. She was tall, but looking up at him she felt dwarfed by his height. For a second she thought about her lecture, the part about the incubus wanting to dominate his partner.
There was really no need with Elvis. His sheer size did that all by itself.
