Sophia's body jumped as the door slammed closed behind Elvis. She felt his absence like a physical hole in her being. Not even a glimmer of his comforting power remained in the room. The office must have built-in Shields she didn't know about. She looked at her sister. "It's not what you think," She said before Aurora could start her rant.
Her sisters brows shot up. "Oh, really? According to Elise, it's exactly what I think. Even your demon says it's exactly what I think. What makes your version different?"
"His name is Elvis. It's about time you start using it." She took a deep breath. "And I love him."
Aurora looked as though she had been struck. "You don't know what your saying-"
"No, Aurora. For the first time in my life, I do-"
"Sophia, he's a demon."
Sophia gave a humorless laugh. "Don't you think I know that? Don't you think I've been telling myself that all along? Don't you think it worries me just as much as it's worrying you?"
"Obviously not."
Sophia managed a smile. "No. I suppose it wouldn't." She let out a long breath. This was the most painful subject imaginable for her sister. "Aurora, I remember what you went through. But Elvis isn't like james."
James, the lust demon who had seduced her sister and nearly broke her spirit, had been sent to infiltrate the cadre and had used her mercilessly. He now resided in a crystal in the dungeon, a well-deserved fate. But Elvis was different.
"I know you think hes-"
"Believe me, he's not the same at all. He didn't bespell me, didn't seduce me. And he has no interest in harming the cadre. How would he have passed the gargoyles test otherwise?"
Aurora looked stubbornly unconvinced. "If he didn't bespell you, how did he get you to agree to....to..."
This time Sophia's smile was wry, but genuine. "I knew how much our father wanted the Demon stone. And Elvis is a very attractive man, in case you hadn't noticed. It wasn't such a sacrifice to give him what he wanted. After I got to know him, I realised what a good person he is on the inside. Aurora, I love him."
"My God, listen to yourself!" Aurora burst out. "He's not a good person, he's a demon! I can't believe-"
"I know I'm not an adept, Aurora, but I've been around demons my whole life. I've tracked them, I've fought against them, I've captured them, I've even befriended some of them. I am quite capable of making my own decisions in this regard."
Her sister gripped the edge of the desk and lowered her eyes, but not before Sophia caught the sudden shine to them. If Sophia didn't know any better, she'd think her sister was tearing up.
Yeah, right.
"I know you're capable," Aurora said. "But you're my sister. I don't want to see you get hurt." She looked up. The shine was all gone, replaced by determination. "You can't love this man! What do you really know about him? He's deceiving you. I know he is."
Sophia was sick of this. If the tables had been turned, nobody would be questioning Aurora's decision. "Why?" Sophia gritted out. "Just because he wants me and not you?"
Aurora sucked in a sharp breath. "Leave me out of this. First of all, he's lying about being an incubus. He's a daemon sapiens masquerading-"
"I know that. He told me."
"Then why is he lying about it to everyone else?" Aurora demanded angrily. "What is he really, then? What kind of demon?"
Sophia folded her arms under her breasts and looked away.
"You don't know, do you?"
"No," She reluctantly admitted. "He said he couldn't tell me."
"Which can only mean he's up to no good," Aurora said. "The only reason a demon hides his Directive is if by telling you, you might change your behavior and ruin his plans. Believe me, he's here for you, Sophia. To possess you."
Sophia snorted incredulously. "That's ridiculous. He told you already, he's here because of a Latin spell I accidentally read aloud."
"What kind of spell?"
She ground her jaw. "It was about sex."
"Show me."
Aurora was so damn stubborn she was like a wolverine when she set her mind on something. And the only way to prove her wrong was to show her the damn spell.
