In the days after the busted love confession, Tay truly tried to make things between him and New as normal as before. Their outings became even more frequent, their late-night messages and phone conversations never dwindled, their public display of affections remained as if each was trying to prove that they were still good as each other's best friend.
"The food here is so good" New cried out "How did you learn about this restaurant?"
Tay looked across the table to his best friend who was smiling with his eyes closed as he savored the food. A little bit of sauce was smeared on New's lips which made the image more adorable.
"Pat and I went here last week. He accompanied me to that photography exhibition I told you about" Tay explained as he took the beef slices New cut for him
"The exhibits were really nice but they only served hors-d-oeuvres so I got very hungry. Luckily, Pat knew about this restaurant which was just a couple of blocks away from where we were. The ambia-"
"Where was I when you went to that exhibition?' New suddenly cut Tay's rambling.
Without missing a beat, Tay answered, "You were filming for your movie so I just sent a message that I was going to see it with Pat. When you didn't reply, I thought you're okay with it"
"Hey, I just asked. Of course, I'm okay with it. I wasn't bothered" New said defensively while scooping the meatballs from Tay's soup.
"Oh, for a second I thought you sounded like a jealous boyfriend" Tay took back some of the meatballs from New's plate. He noticed New winced from his remark.
"Sorry. Is it still too early to make that joke?" Tay inquired innocently. Was his timing off again?
"You're impossible" New grumbled and harshly took Tay's plate and transferred it to his side of the table.
It was already late in the evening when New got home from his dinner with Tay. He immediately collapsed on his couch and stared at the ceiling. The events of the week played back in his mind like one of those terrible romantic comedies White insisted to watch with the whole GMMTV gang. Everything that happened over the week felt disjointed starting from Tay confessing to him, him rejecting Tay, Tay accepting the rejection, and them eating at a restaurant like the same old chummy friends they once were just a few days after.
He took out his phone and scrolled through his list of contacts. After not finding the person's name, New realized how he has already forgotten when and why the contact number was no longer on his phone. With an apprehensive heart, New dialed the number he has memorized over the years. She answered after the third ring.
"New?" she asked hesitantly.
"Yeah May, It's me" New answered just as uncertainly.
"Well, this is a surprise. I haven't heard from you in almost a year" his ex-girlfriend laughed and New remembered how this was once the sound he used to love hearing "Why did you call?"
New cleared his throat, "You know how I sincerely loved you in the three years that we were together, right?"
