"This is horrible" New whined as he stomped his feet childishly underneath the table.
The giddiness New felt that morning while thinking of how surprised his mother would be if she sees him with Tay vanished instantly upon arriving at his condo. The moment he opened the door to his place, he was met with the image of his mother having a candid conversation with Tay's mother no less.
Seated on the other side of the table was Tay who laughed shamelessly at his boyfriend's antics. He called for the server and ordered an additional assortment of desserts. He knew that it would take more than a mountain of sweets before the younger one could calm down.
And as they sat at their favorite restaurant waiting for their mothers to return from the restroom, the younger one decided to air a few more of his complaints.
"Are you okay talking about it here?" Tay regarded the growing number of eyes and phones pointed at their direction. He thought that the growing commotion around them was adding up to the other's stress.
"What?" New looked at Tay incredulously before noticing how his eyes were darting looks at several tables behind them. A couple of excited girls and boys occupied the tables where they sat noisily as they held their phones tightly.
"Oh, I don't mind them," New said indifferently. "But my mom snitching to your mother regarding her concerns about our relationship, that I mind very much" he stomped his feet again for emphasis.
Tay reached out for the younger one's hand to placate him, "Hey, let's hear them out first"
Just in time, two elegant women came walking back to their table while chattering happily, oblivious to their sons' concerns.
"Mae, what did you want to talk to me about?" New asked immediately as his mom took the seat next to him.
She sighed and looked at her son pointedly, "Can I at least take a bite of my food first"
Tay narrowed his eyes at the man across from him. "I thought you didn't want your mother to talk to other people about us"
New, like usual, simply shrugged off Tay's cold stare as he echoed his mom's sigh before absentmindedly cutting the lamb chops into smaller pieces and placing them on the glaring man's plate.
The two women who witnessed this subtle display of affection from the younger boy could not help but laugh. When New looked up, he saw Tay's blushing face now holding a grin and Mae Moo elbowing him teasingly.
"Newwiee is really the sweetest boy" Tay's mother cooed to the woman who was smiling proudly at her son.
New ducked his head low and hurriedly cut more pieces of the meat to share with the two giggling women.
After New finished the last slice of cake, his mother turned to him and took his hand gently, "Son, I know that you are having a hard time right now"
She turned to Tay quickly, aware of the boy's tendency to overthink "And Tay, I am not blaming you" Tay managed a nod in spite of the flash of guilt he felt from the older woman's words.
"You have found love and that should have been a cause for celebration. But sadly, not everyone can recognize the love you have for each other because of their own prejudices" New's mother caressed her son's back "As you are both in a terrible position right now, all we want is to protect you as best as we can"
Tay's mother smiled at the boys, "At first, we thought about providing you with as many life advices as we can until we realized that you are already capable of deciding for yourselves. We trust in your ability to make your own path. But, if you are having any hesitations because you're worrying about what we are thinking then stop that thought. We love you so much and we are staying beside you through it all"
