Madison had avoided eye contact, until he got to the table. She was slightly embarrassed that she was staring. But it didn't seem to bother him.
" hey funny seeing you here"- Lucas
"Yeah it's weird being here, you know being a doctor and all"-Madison
Madison's comment had made Lucas smile. He was used to her snarky remarks. He had caught on to her humour almost immediately when they first started talking. At one point he did expect for them too get married and so did the whole Rez. But he was grateful they broke things off. If they didn't he would've never had met his beautiful wife. He wouldn't be there at that moment waiting for his son to come into this world
"Well what brings you here Lucas?" Madison was truly curious. Lucas had hated the hospital. Was he sick? Did he have a terminal disease? Was one of his family members sick? These thoughts had worried her.
"Well, you know Maria right? My wife. She's in labor at the moment."
"Oh wow that's amazing, congratulations. . I'm so happy for you"
"Yes it is. Thank you. I'm just a bit nervous, it's our first child. I just hope I'm going to be a good father and all you know"
"Believe me, Everything WILL be fine. And you will be an amazing father."
"Thank you I really needed to hear that. I need to get these coffees upstairs we've been here for a LONG time"
"Okay you better get going then, you know how your mother gets when she doesn't get her coffee"
"Ohhh yeah. It was good seeing you. You're looking good"
"I look like a fucking beached whale"
"A beautiful beached whale"
" ohh, stop and get going, unless you have the 100 bags of herring eggs on you"
Lucas laughed and shook his head and left. He really had loved that girl and her humour.
After she bumped into Lucas she finished her lunch break and headed back in. She stopped to talk to one of the nurses before going to finish paperwork. Just as she sat down her phone rang. The caller ID said "Russell R" she hesitated answering and let it ring a few times.
"Hello" Madison said in a professional manner. Russell always hated when she used that voice, especially with him. And Madison knew that, so lately she used it all the time. just to get on his nerves a little bit.
"Hey, Madison. Do you have time to talk?"
"Five minutes"
"So, uhhh I got the results back....."
There was a long pause. Madison wasn't sure what she wanted the results to be. She never really thought of this moment, because it truly wasn't any of her business. Sure Russell thought about it all the time and he wanted Madison to be the first person other than him to know. He hadn't read the results yet. Madison and him were going to find out together.
"You still there Russ? Helllloooo. I have to go in a few minutes"
"Ohhh yeah sorry, so yeah I got the results back from the paternity test thing. And I wanted us to find out together"
"And why is that? It's not like the results are going to impact my life a whole lot."
"Please Madison"
"Okay do tell"
" HOLY SHIT, it's not a match. Wow I'm off the hook. I'm not the father. Wow isn't a wonderful day"
"Wow way to go you didn't knock up my so called best friend, you really should get and award. Award for husband of the year. Your acceptance speech could start like this. "Thank you everyone, I was able to get this award by dodging getting my wife's best friend pregnant. And I have to especially thank my sperm. Thank you for not doing your magic"
Madison hung up right away. And couldn't help but laugh at her last comment. She wished she could've seen his face when she said that. After her call she went on with her day and went home.
