Fayette walked down the stairs as her name was called. Cold and sharp eyes gazed into the crowd, stunning the whole room of her beauty. Alexander stared at his chosen in awe, despite the pain rushing in his chest.
She truly is a goddess, he thought.
Drake and Kailen were by her side the moment she set foot on the function room floors. "Gotta keep the boys away," Kailen winked.
"Or they will see hell." Drake growled.
Fayette only smiled at that, the first sign of warmth that she let out. They walked her to the stage where the king and queen stood. Oberon gave a nod, holding back the snarl as he noticed most unmated males staring at his daughter. Rhyannon cupped Fayette's face fondly when she was by their side. "My baby is all grown up."
Fayette leaned towards the warmth only her mother could give and hummed. She stepped on to the podium and began to speak.
"Welcome to the Palace of the Faes. I thank you all for coming to another one of my birthday celebrations. Please do party till your heart's content."
The crowd cheered as she gave them a polite smile. Fayette sat down on her chair and watched her people's gleeful faces. It was truly a wonderful sight. After a year of fighting, this is what they deserve. A night full of happiness, free from the troubles of the brewing war.
Alex confidently walked to his chosen, the beauty of her almost catching him off guard again.
"May I have this dance?" Fayette put her hand on his and stood up. "You may," she replied.
He led them both to the center of the room and started swaying. "You look rather dashing today, Alex." He only smiled at that and pulled her close.
She looked up at him through her lashes, admiring the view. Alexander was truly a sight to behold. The onyx black hair was gelled back making him look sharp, those blue eyes always looking at her softly.
"I sometimes wish you're my mate," he whispered. Fayette's grip on his neck tightened, "What are you talking about?"
"Nothing," he gave her a strained smile, one not going unnoticed. He mentally kicked himself for saying that. He was supposed to let her go. Today will be the day she will be claimed.
But isn't it also a good time to finally tell her?
"Fayette, I love you."
She only smiled up at him and nodded. This was no different from the times he said that, right?
"Fayette Clementine Lockwood, I love you."
Fayette paused. The look in his eyes made her stop. It was the first time she has ever seen his so serious, so earnest. "My feelings for you is more than what I'd feel for a friend."
"I love you. I really do."
This is definitely a surprise to her. All this time she thought he had only seen her as a sister, a friend. But for it to be more than that?
"Alex, I don't know what to say."
She was so baffled at the new revelation that Fayette is finally seeing him in a different light. Alexander, the goofy friend who always made her smile liked her more than she thought.
"You don't have to say anything, because tonight I'm letting you go." He looked ready to cry. His eyes were glassy but he smiled like he always did.
It was unfair, Fayette thought. She didn't even get to think about whether she'd take the chance or not because he had finally brought up the courage to set her free.
"My chosen, know that I will love you and will give my all in protecting you forever." Alexander knew in his heart that even if he did find his mate, he would always love the girl in front of him with all his might.
Fayette paused. Chosen?
This was unfair to her. It was truly unfair. Alexander had bonded with her without her knowing. If only she knew sooner..
Would she have accepted him?
This was sweet and caring Alexander, she knew she would have. And maybe if he took the chance in the past, today would have been another story. But bonding with another while her mate was still breathing? She also knew she couldn't.
Then a scent wafted around the air. It was alluring and bringing her close. Mate, she thought.
"He's here, huh." Alexander smiled and kissed her forehead, breaking the trance. "Goodbye, my love."
This was all too fast for Fayette to handle. She needed to get away. She couldn't think, she didn't know what to do.
Run.
Everything inside of her was telling her, urging her to run. So instead of facing the scent head on, she excused herself from her parents and went to where her heart felt calm. The balcony.
Thoughts were swirling in her head. Alexander? Chosen? Mate? This made her head ache, it was all too confusing.
Behind the shadows of the curtain lay Apollo Zion Romanov, King of the Lycans. He gazed at his confused and troubled mate. She couldn't even notice him.
He stared at his mate after all these years of controlling his lycan. Apollo finally let himself see her again.
"Princess."
Fayette immediately shielded herself and her scent, disappearing from the lycan's view. Apollo knew of her abilities and knew exactly where she is. She couldn't hide from the bond. His princess was near.
"Mate, let us talk."
Fayette uncovered the veil and stared at her half, baffled. "Lycan."
"Yes, that is what I am." He removed his coat and gently put it over her shoulders. No one should ever look at this beauty so exquisitely clad. He wasn't even surprised that she was her mate. She thought back on the years. She remembered his face. She remembered him when she was a child. Everyone knew, everyone except her.
Fayette felt utterly heartbroken and betrayed. They all knew. Did they think she was too incapable of knowing?
"Why are you here?" She spoke.
Apollo wondered what made her heart ache. His heart was also sore, it was tiny but it was there.
"Why are you sad?"
"Answer me." Fayette's voice was cold and distant, exactly like the stories were. The princess killing machine.
"I have come to claim you." Apollo replied as if it were obvious.
And then she ran away again.
