I'd to think that my brother likes the videos I leave for him- or at the very least, that he finds them comprehensive or useful, or understands why we make them.
"Work was good," I say to the camera, that will later be audience to John. "I think this new girl, Allison, likes me, but I'm not sure. She keeps trying to talk to me... They put me on plans for a new house in Greenwich. Ten thousand-square feet, can you imagine? No one needs a house that big.
"I left on time," I say, as if I don't do that every single day. "I ran into Sarah in the lobby and helped her bring her groceries up, so if you see her, and she tries to pinch your cheek and loves you, that's why." We always make a note about the people we run into.
"I made the rest of the chicken. I hope you're not too sick of it yet, but we couldn't afford to keep throwing stuff out and stay within budget. Um... yeah." I trail off, trying to think up any last minute details he needs to know, or a joke or two to tell him, or god forbid, even a good way to end the video. It's really hard to come up with continuously original material when you've been doing this for as long as I have.
"Um, I've been feeling kind of tired lately, have you? I hope you're getting your four hours in. Uhm... well... see you." I say lamely. I click off the recorder with a rewired remote.
