Kate
I let out a gasp and my grip tightens around Stryder's hand. Last time I saw him was at the park. We hadn't talked about it or anything. We just broke up and that was it. The feelings I had the day I found out start to resurface and I bite my lip to keep the tears in. "Who the hell are you?" Stryder asks lowly. I take a deep breath. "Stryder, meet Gunner." Stryder's expression doesn't change. "Gunner why are you here?" I ask. He just smirks. "Mom got a new job. We're pretty good on money now. We moved and I had to go to school so this was our best option." I shake my head. "Did you know I went here?" He shakes his head.
"We're going to be late, come on Kate." Stryder whispers tugging at my arm. "Oh so you go by Kate now?" I look at him angrily. "No I do not. Now, we're not friends, do not ever come up to me again." I turn around and let Stryder pull me to our first class. We sit in our usual seats and he glances at me every so often. I'm a little shaken up by seeing Gunner so as I take deep breaths in and out I'm startled as I hear the teacher calling my name. "Yes?" "Did you hear the question?" I shake my head slowly. The teacher lets out a frustrated grunt. "Pay attention please." I nod and I get back to calming myself down. It's not that big a deal. He's not here to hurt me or anything, he just happened to transfer here. Neither of us have feelings for each other so we can easily stay out of each other's way.
Why am I getting so worked up over this? He may have been my first everything, I may have loved him with my whole heart, and he may have cheated, but he's not important anymore. I should probably worry about the fact that even our friends think we're dating. Honestly I'm not okay with Autumn not knowing. How was I supposed to talk to someone about this? I can't rant to her about it.
The bell rings and I jump out of my seat. I walk out of the classroom and to my next one. Thoughts race through my head as I speed walk to my class. I kept my head down and my mouth shut. I'm about five feet away from the door when my wrist is grabbed and my body is forcefully pulled into a closet. "Is that the Gunner?" Stryder asks, his face neutral as usual. I nod. He shakes his head. "If he messes with you let me know." I shake my head, I didn't want Stryder to get in more trouble, just for me. "He won't mess with me. If he does, I don't need you getting in trouble, I can handle myself." He nods. "I know you can, but just know I'm here." I nod and he smiles happily. We walk out of the closet and the boys all smirk. I roll my eyes and walk to the next class.
Two weeks pass and nothing's changed. We still go to our classes, Stryder and I have to hold hands in front of people, and people still believe our lie. There was two more weeks until graduation and the halls buzz with happy, cheerful, hopeful kids. Everyone was so happy to be done with high school. I'll admit I'm quite excited to leave. I got into Arizona State University with a scholarship. Full free ride for four years. I'm pretty proud of myself for that and I've been slowly packing up my things. Autumn and Ryan are also coming to ASU with me and I'm grateful I'll have friends I know going. Stryder got accepted at Texas A&M University on a baseball scholarship. He's very pleased with himself because they've had some of the best college baseball teams. Noah also got accepted there on a baseball scholarship.
I promised him I'd come to at least one of his games. As I walk into the school with Stryder by my side, he pushes me against the wall. I look up at him curiously. What the hell was he doing? He bends his head down and his lips are so close to mine I can practically taste them. I close my eyes and wait. But nothing happens so I open my eyes. He looks down at me amused. His smirk grows as he sees me growing red. "You were really about to let me kiss you." I shake my head quickly. "I-I was just making it look real." He laughs sarcastically. "Oh, okay." My wrists were still in his grasp above my head, so I rip them out. I take my hand and slap his shoulder. "I was! Now why the hell did you do that?" He smiles and stares at me for another few seconds before he starts walking. "People are starting to get suspicious. We don't kiss, hug, or hang out just us."
