-Twenty-one-
Kate
It's been two years. I haven't talked or seen Stryder since the last time we called. I'm now twenty-one. I'm allowed to go to bars with my friends. Today, I have my first date since the breakup.
"Autumn help me!" I'm rummaging through my closest looking for my best dress. She laughs and is quickly by my side, looking for my best dress. "Aha!" She yells pulling it off the hanger. I laugh and hug her. "Thank you!" I quickly take my robe off and slip into the dress. Gosh, I looked amazing! "Now sit!" I laugh and do as I'm told. She straightens my hair then does some twisting and pulling and finally, I honestly looked like a princess. It looked so cool. I had already done my makeup and I was completely ready.
"As soon as I see you again, we're going to finish the wedding plans, you understand!" She throws her head back and laughs. "We're not getting married until after college, but whatever floats your boat." I smile widely and grab my keys. I get into my truck and drive to a fancy restaurant. About a year ago, he graduated and he's making bank! That's not why I'm going out with him though, I just couldn't be more proud. I park my truck and walk inside the restaurant. The lady smiles. "Are you Kate Hart?" I nod. She nods. "This way." I follow her to our table.
He stands up and smiles. "Wyatt!" I excitedly say. He laughs and we hug tightly. The lady leaves and I sit down. "I can't believe I haven't seen you in a year." He says with a pout. I nod sadly. "You're still as gorgeous as before." He whispers with a smirk. Nothing. I don't blush or anything. But I do smile lightly. "Thank you." He laughs. "What were you thinking about eating little lady?" I look at the menu. Everything looked delicious. The waitress brings us two wine glasses and their best bottle of wine. I look at Wyatt with my eyebrows raised. He smirks. She pours us both a glass then pulls out her notepad. "You folks ready?" I look at Wyatt and we both nod. "I'll have the shrimp scampi." He looks at me with a smile. "That sounds really yummy, I think I will too." The waitress smiles and takes our menus. "Coming right up." We nod and get back to our small talk.
"So how have classes been? I'm so thankful I've finally graduated." I laugh. "They're good. I'm excelling in every class. I graduate next year and I'm really close to moving back home." He frowns. "You're leaving." I shrug. "Maybe, I haven't decided just yet." Lie. But his smile widens. "Well, maybe after tonight you'll know." I look at him with amusement. "Is that right Mr. Confident?" He laughs. "Damn right." I laugh and after a couple more minutes our dish is brought to us. We don't really talk as much because our mouths were full. But once we finish we both say how good this dish was. After a lot of bickering, he finally wins and pays for dinner. He grabs my hand, leading me to my truck. He lays against it and pulls me into him. I look into his eyes, they were glistening mischievously.
Slowly, he leans in and we start kissing. It was slow, soft, good, but it wasn't him. I pull back and look at him with a look of guilt. He sighs and looks to his left. "I'm sorry Wyatt." He nods and I step back. "No, I get it. What you guys had, god I was always intimidated by it. I don't even know why I thought I could change your mind tonight." I look at him with a pout. He smiles sadly and pulls me into a hug. I let out a long sigh as I lay on his chest. We pull apart. I stick my hand out. "Stay as best friends?" He shakes it with a genuine smile. "Yes, ma'am sounds like a deal." I smile, stand on my tippy toes, and give him a kiss on the cheek. He opens my door for me and I thank him for tonight. I wait until he's out of the way, then I start the drive home.
As I open our door I find Autumn watching Netflix on our t.v. She looks at the time then looks at me with a frown. "No luck?" I shake my head and flop onto the bed. "Goddammit Autumn! He was the perfect gentlemen tonight, he's still as sexy as before, and god damn he was a good kisser, but," She interrupts me. "But he wasn't Stryder." I lift my head to look at her. I nod, then I lay back down and let out a long sigh.
"What am I going to do? I can't live like this forever. It's been three fucking years. Shouldn't I be over him by now?" She shrugs. "That's for you to decide." I shake my head. "Well, I should be. I'm the one that broke up with him." She nods. "I guess right now isn't the best time to tell you this but, Stryder has a new girlfriend." I sit up and look at her. My entire body stopped. I could've asked anything else, but instead, I ask. "What does she look like?" She pulls out her phone and opens Instagram. After scrolling for a little bit she gives me her phone.
There he stood, as handsome as ever. But with someone else attached to his hip. She had dark brown hair, shoulder length. What looked like green eyes, freckles all over her face, about as tall as me, same body shape as me. My mouth drops and I look at Autumn. She nods. "She looks just like me, besides her face shape. But she's my literal clone." She nods again with a frown. "I can't be jealous can I?" She shakes her head. I nod and give her the phone back. "Well, I'm happy for him. He deserves to be happy again. After all, I am the one who broke us up." She gets off the bed and gives me a hug. "Sorry, hun." I shrug. She lets go and I stand up. "I'm going to go take a warm shower." She nods and I leave the room. Stop thinking about him. You've been doing good.
