7:45 a.m.
I groaned in annoyance and reached over to silence the high pitched buzz of my alarm clock. Another day that I didn't want to face.
Great.
I checked my phone for the weather. Looks like I'll be wearing a sweater today. It was the end of September and we were entering into November, so it was still Autumn, but it already felt like winter. I loved the weather at this time of year. The music, the mood, the colors. Everything was absolutely perfect.
I walked across the hall to my bathroom and got the shower ready. As I stepped in, I couldn't help but shiver from the sudden change in temperature. The water was hot against my skin. It was cold inside of my house, so the feeling was nice. I let the water run down my face and just started to think. I started to think about everything being so perfect at the moment. Life in General was just really great. No drama at or outside of school, no drama at work, no family drama. Everything was just great. I smiled to myself as I finished washing off my body and turned off the shower.
Walking out of the bathroom, I walked up to Calum's room and banged on the door. "Wake up, Cal. It's 8."
A muffled groan came from inside of his room and I could hear the movement of his bed sheets. I rolled my eyes and smiled at his child-like attitude in the mornings. "I'm gonna get dressed and by the time you're done getting ready, breakfast will be ready to eat."
Silence.
"There will be bacon." I chime.
After about 6 seconds of waiting to hear something from him, the door is swung open and a messy-haired Calum stands, looking at me with tired eyes. "Bacon?" He asks.
"Yes, Cal. Bacon." I chuckle. "And eggs."
"I'll be ready in 30." He says with a small smile.
"30 minutes it is then, Hood." I smile. I walk away to my room and close the door behind me and start getting dressed for the day. I pull on my sweater, my skinny jeans, fix my hair a bit, put on a quick bit of powder foundation, some mascara and put my mix-matched socks on before waltzing towards the kitchen to get breakfast started.
The smell of bacon filled the air after only a few seconds of putting it on the pan. My stomach started grumbling and I was already drooling I was so hungry. After finishing the eggs, I started on the toast and set up a plate for Calum and I. While buttering the toast, I heard a padding of feet accelerating down the hallway towards the kitchen.
"I smell bacon!" Calum proclaims while loudly inhaling the air. Calum came from behind me and put an arm on my shoulder and grabbed his plate. "Thanks, babe." He smiled at me and gave me a quick peck on the cheek before snatching the toast out of my hand and walking towards the table.
I got my plate and sat with him at the table. "What time are you gonna pick me up after work?" I ask stuffing my mouth with eggs.
"Hopefully by 6, maybe earlier."
"Really?" I ask with wide eyes, shocked at his statement. "You're always late. Losing track of time with Marli." I tease.
"Actually," he sighs, "I'm breaking up with her today. I've been planning on it all weekend."
"What? Why?"
"Hm," he shrugs while chewing his food, "she cheated on me with half of the football team." He says.
I let out a small chuckle and looked to Calum with a smirk on my face, his glance meeting mine with the same expression across our faces.
And as if it were scripted, we blurted out the word "Slut" in unison and burst out into a fit of giggles.
Our laughter was interrupted by my phone buzzing on the counter. I got up with my plate and set it into the sink gently before walking to where my phone was to answer it.
"Hello?"
"Hey, Zia? It's Luke."
"Yeah, I know. I have caller i.d. you dunce." I chuckled.
"Hey, hey, no need to get sassy. Sheesh. Anyway, I was wondering if you could maybe hang out after school tomorrow? I need help in chemistry."
"Why? You have an A in that class."
"Had." He explains. "I had an A, but then that Martin kid moved classes and now I have a C. I need an A in order to get my car."
"Okay. Yeah, I guess I can help." I sigh into the phone.
"Thanks so much. I'll see you in class."
"Okay, see ya."
"Did I mention you sound extra super, super cute this morning?" He says charmingly through the phone.
"Goodbye, Luke." I smile to myself and hang up before he can say anything else.
Luke has liked me ever since the 3rd grade. We've been great friends ever since, but he's never tried making any moves until just last year. I think he's cute and all and I would totally go out with him, but Calum doesn't exactly like the idea of us. And I knew if we were to ever become a thing, Cal would step right in and try to ruin us. He's looking after me, I know, because I'm younger and he's known me longer than Luke, but I'm almost 18 and still haven't even had my first kiss.
"Why does that kid keep calling you? Don't you ever get annoyed by him?" Calum asks, annoyed by the fact that Luke always calls me every morning to talk about anything and nothing.
"He just likes talking to me, Cal. You know that."
"Yeah, Zia. I know, but damn, does he really have to call every fucking morning?" His voice starts to raise in volume and annoyance.
"Calm down. We're just friends and you know that. And he calls because he likes to talk to me. You know he doesn't have that many friends."
"Probably because he can't shut his fucking mouth."
"Calum!"
"What?" He shrugs.
"You're being rude." I scowl at him. "And besides, he said he just likes to hear my voice." I explain calmly, looking down at my hands as I twiddle my thumbs shyly.
"Oh, come on, Z. You've got to be kidding me." He rolls his eyes. "He's so pathetic."
"Whatever." I say and walk towards the door to put on my shoes. "Can you just get the keys? We're gonna be late for class."
"Fine. We're talking about this tonight though, alright?" He says putting his now empty plate into the sink.
"Whatever. Let's just go, please."
Even though Calum is just my roommate and we've been friends since diapers, we've always had a thing for one another. We knew it existed, we just never acted on it. The only time any affection is shown is if he kisses me on the cheek or moves his hands to my butt and gropes it. Or he'll just stare at my chest. He is hot though, I'm not going to lie, but I don't exactly know if I wanna be more than what we are now. I know he'll take care of me, but the ways he acts with me when he's had a girlfriend all this time is just a bit unsettling. I guess we're just going to remain cuddle buddies for now until everything gets sorted out.
But now it's time for school and that means I get to see Luke and I'm ridiculously giddy once we pulled into the school parking lot.
"I'll see you at 6?" Calum asks looking at me once we've parked.
"See you at 6." I reply with a small smile before stepping out of the car into the cool Autumn air and walking towards the school entrance.
