The crew stood on an aligned row of crates observing and analyzing the high school party. They watched the upperclassmen dance, drink and practically dry hump each other on the dance floor. "Do you see him, I don't see him?" Monse asked as she stood up on her tippy toes to get a better view.
"Something bad is happening I can feel it I knew this was a bad idea," Jamal said as his face scrunched up in worry.
Valeria bit her lip, nervously fidgeting with her fingers. "Cesar's taking a real long time I hope he's okay." Valeria said squinting her eyes in search for him.
"Pop a zannie J, we can't see him because he's being stealth and princesa relax he's fine."
Valeria smiled looking up at him since she was 4'9 meanwhile Ruby was 5'2. "No doubt he's got this, when has Cesar ever disappoint."
"Remember 4th grade in the kickball tournament we lost."
"Only cause I picked the kid with no skills." Valeria turned around immediately recognizing her brother's voice "I'm so glad your okay, I was getting worried."
Cesar chuckled approaching his younger sister, "I'm fine Val relax."
He handed her a bottle of water, then hopped on the crate next to her.
"thank you." She mumbled turning the cap.
"And Jamal I would pick you again, loyalty trumps victory compa." Cesar says handing everyone else their beers. "Take it in, this is about to be us."
"This is high school."
"Ruby you think your brother's gonna marry Angelica?" Monse asked.
Ruby sighed shrugging his shoulders. "No idea Mario tells me jack."
Jamal let out a loud laugh, "What about that time he said Angelica had a dangler."
"What's a dangler?" valeria asked.
Ruby turned his head to the short girl. "you see princesa a dangler is when a woman-" Cesar immediately reached over to slap his head.
"don't tell her that stupid."
Ruby winced, lifting his hand up to soothe the stinging ache. He lifted his head shooting Cesar a glare before focusing his eyes straight.
Ruby let out a smile, "Woah guys check out huerita at nine o clock."
Valeria rolled her eyes, clenching her water bottle in her hand slightly.
"Monse, Valerie if you guys were girls-"
"We are girls." They replied simultaneously, the annoyance in their voice evident.
"Yeah. But if you were a girl like that, would you wear underwear?"
Valeria scoffed hitting Ruby's arm, "bitch if you don't shut up."
"Um excuse me I am not a bitch I can't be one, a bitch is a female dog and I am neither a female nor a dog." Valeria rolled her eyes once again, taking a deep breath.
Ruby stuck his finger up in the air. "Careful, they might get stuck in the back of your head if you keep doing that."
Valeria narrowed her eyes, "you know what ruby-"
"What Val, wha-"
"Oh, my god, I'm gonna die. I'm gonna die. I'm gonna die."
Monse let out a sigh, "Why are you gonna die?"
"Those guys play for the ridge. Did you know that last year alone over a quorum of kids-" Jamal started.
"Died playing football." Monse finished, already hearing her friends rant over 10 times.
"You're stuck on repeat." Shaking her head, Monse took a sip of her beer. "So, don't play."
"No choice. My pops was a legend. It's family tradition." Jamal exhaled as he struggled to catch his breath.
"I'm dead." Jamal says shakily hopping off the crate he bent over and placed his head in between his legs.
"Your not dead." Monse stated hopping off the crate to stand next to him. "
"Football spiral?" Cesar asked hopping off next.
"Man, those guys are huge." Valeria eyed the football players tilting her head slightly.
"Not helping Val."
Shrugging her shoulders, she hopped off the crate to squat next to him rubbing his back soothingly.
"Guys check out my game, Huerita just gave me the nod." Ruby says imitating the nod the older blonde gave him.
Raising an eyebrow at the boy, Valeria blew the hair out of her face as she crossed her arms.
Ruby let out a loud gasp as the back of his neck was grabbed.
"eyeing my girl, cabron?"
"No. God, no. I'm not into blondes." Ruby winced as the cholos grip got tighter.
"Easy he does your moms taxes," Cesar explained. Valeria noticed the man that grabbed onto Ruby was her older brother's gang member, friend. She knew she could've said something but decided to let Ruby suffer a little bit more for his comments earlier.
"Yeah, Mrs. Guzman, right?"
Ruby shut his eyes tightly as his heart raced. "Three thousand dollar refund. Schedule C, line 30, home office deduction."
"Seriously, dude?"
Valeria shook her head, "Sad Eyes!" She finally called out. Shifting his vision from Cesar to Val, he softened his gaze.
"Ay, Val what you doin here?" he asked looking down at the small girl.
"Don't worry about it. Tell your friend to let him go, please."
"Yo what you doin ese that's spooky's little sister and that's his bro dawg."
Val smiled flipping her hair over her shoulder. The man let go of ruby pushing him slightly making him stumble into Valeria.
"Sorry, didn't realize that was you guys homie. My bad but tell spooky, sad eyes sends respect."
Val tilted Ruby's head checking for bruises as he placed one hand on the side of his neck massaging it. He placed his other on the hand on the small of her back.
"Thank god for your brother." ruby breathed out looking down at her.
"Don't, thank god for better things." Val frowned at the comment.
Suddenly loud gunshots were fired nearby, the crew immediately took off out of the dark alley.
"oh shit!" Ruby and Cesar immediately grabbing onto Val before running.
"That was a .38"
"No it was a .45"
"It sounded like a .44"
".357!" They all shouted in unison as they laughed running to Ruby's house.
