10:58AMSaturday morning, her parent's arrival was punctuated by a light knock (as if she couldn't hear them arguing their way up the driveway) and Illy swung the door open with a large smile to welcome them.
She embraced Audrey and her father in a slightly awkward group hug before stepping back from the door so they could come in.
"Traffic was a nightmare," the tall, silver-haired woman had already started to complain in her gravelly voice as she shrugged out of her coat, "I'm so upset. It took us almost an hour longer to get here than it should've and I told that man-"
"It's the new policy," her father cut in, "because of those autonomous cars."
Audrey shook her head and pursed her lips, turning to Illy with a roll of her eyes, "I told that man that he could just drive around the body and that way everyone could go by. How am I heartless for making a reasonable suggestion? It's ludicrous to think-"
"Oh that's horrible. I hope it's better tomorrow," Illy said, emotionless. She was barely paying attention to the conversation as she guided them into the living room where the comforting smell of pastry and freshly brewed coffee lingered.
As they settled onto the overstuffed couches, Audrey looked around, "Where's my Alexis?"
"I'm guessing she's still asleep," Illy poured them both coffee and placed a plate of the homemade cookies next to the brownies she'd already set out on the coffee table, "You know she's not a morning person."
"Oh that's right," Audrey took a sip of her coffee after adding sugar, giving Illy an inquisitive look, "so how come you haven't told us all about that new job you got, hm? Every time I ask you about it, you barely say a peep. Hell, you don't even call anymore, Illy and I wouldn't jump the gun and say you're being ungrateful but I'm starting feel like I don't even know you anymore."
As if she ever did.
Audrey could never have children of her own so when the girls came into her life, she was happy to play the role of mother.
Or it seemed that way at first.
Illy was looking forward to having a mother too, but it was clear from the start that Alexis was easier, being the younger, unproblematic one, and Audrey always doted on her like she'd given birth to her, all by herself.
Illy was far too difficult. She was strange; private, non-verbal and she preferred to observe, just like her father did.
He would only divulge information if it was important, otherwise, the man was a brick wall.
His personality served him well in his career as an entrepreneur but when it came to his role as a father, he fell a bit short of being an ideal figure, prioritizing his professional success over his familial responsibilities.
