October 17, 1971
Over the next week, things went roughly the same as Queen's first concert on their tour went. They play amazingly then they go to a raving after party and, all except for Thalia, drink. After this particular concert, though, John had gotten extraordinarily drunk for the first time since his birthday party two months ago.
Thalia and Brian paid special attention to John as he danced his heart out in the middle of the club, with Roger and Freddie sitting across the table from them. The other two definitely were partying throughout the night, but nothing closed to what Deaky was doing.
It was nearing three in the morning and John was still going hard. By this point, Freddie was sitting at the bar chatting in a large group and Roger had left with some girl. Just Brian and Thalia remained at the table. Brian had usually stayed to himself around Thalia, so she wanted to use this chance to get to know the guitarist a bit more.
"You know why I don't drink anymore," she started. "But why do you never drink that much?"
Brian stares at her, slightly shocked that she asked.
"I'm sorry if that came off a little rude-"
"No, no. It's alright," Brian interrupted. "I just don't really like how I behave when I drink too much. I always just end up pissing everyone off. Plus half the fun of going to parties is watching everyone else make a fool of themselves," he said gesturing to John, who had bumped into a potted plant and was frantically apologizing to it.
Thalia giggled. As wild as John could get when he was drunk, he could also be very entertaining.
"That is true. I've noticed ever since my whole predicament started that I've been paying more attention to how other people act when they've had a bit too much." Thalia thought back to some of the crazy things she'd seen people, especially the band, do while they were drunk.
Suddenly John appeared in front of them and pulled Thalia to her feet.
"Come dance with me, my dear!" He said as he dragged her into the crowd.
Thalia danced carelessly with John for a while before all of her problems began to slowly creep back to her. Just being with John let her forget about everything wrong with her life for just a few songs. The cheerful look on her face faded.
"What's wrong?" He asked.
"Nothing at all," she responded, not able to convince him this time.
"C'mon. You know you can tell me anything," he said, his words slurring together.
"I'll tell you if you can remember this conversation tomorrow."
"Alright. Deal," he said before continuing to dance erratically.
Thalia decided that it was time for her to sit back down again. She walked back over to the table through the crowd and sat in the seat next to Brian. He was engrossed in an argument between a group of girls who were about to leave who didn't know whose coat was whose. He chuckled to himself before realizing Thalia had returned to her previous spot.
"Welcome back. How was your dance?" He asked.
She smiled. "Wonderful. How was your people watching?"
"So very amusing. Get this, there was this-"
Brian was interrupted by a sudden noise and a wave of gasps. All the chatter in the club stopped and all heads turned to the source of the sound.
"Deaky? Deaky?" Freddie asked frantically.
Thalia and Brian shot up and pushed through the crowd. They saw Freddie crouched over an unconscious John. Thalia knelt down beside him and held onto his arm, trying to shake him akwake.
"...John?" She whispered, on the verge of tears.
"Someone call an ambulance!" Brian ordered as he knelt beside John as well.
After a couple of minutes of complete panic in the club, the ambulance finally arrived.
"What happened?" A paramedic asked as two of her colleagues got John on to a stretcher.
Freddie, who by this point was hysterical, stepped forward. "I saw a very large trench coat in the coat room..." he stopped to take a couple of hitched breaths. "So naturally we decided for him to get on my shoulders so we could make one very tall man. I guess one of us lost our balance and..."
Thalia, Brian, and the paramedic all stared at Freddie for a moment to process the ridiculous story he told. They were all interrupted by one of the other paramedics calling out to them. The ambulance was ready to go. Thalia rode in the ambulance while Freddie and Brian had to follow them in a cab.
Thalia had so many thoughts running through her head as she looked at John laying on the stretcher. She couldn't bear for anything to happen to him. She loved him so much, heck, he was the father of her child. To keep from crying, she looked away from John and glued her eyes to the floor.
When they arrived at the hospital Thalia, Freddie, and Brian had to stay in the waiting room while the doctors did tests on John. Brian went straight to the pay phone to call Roger at the hotel. There was no answer. Brian sighed and sat down with the other two. The three eventually dozed off as they waited for the doctor to come back.
Thalia woke up to the sound of a nurse's heels clicking on the linoleum floor. She noticed Thalia stretched and turned toward her.
"Good, you're awake. You're able to see him now," she said in a heavy northern accent.
Thalia quickly got up and followed the nurse to the room John was in, leaving Brian and Freddie sleeping in the waiting room.
"He has a minor fracture in his wrist from trying to catch himself. His head is fine though. He's just resting now," the nurse explained as Thalia pulled a chair close to the bed.
Thalia held John's good hand and eventually fell asleep with her head down on the bed.
When she next woke up the sun was shining in her eyes and she felt a hand brushing the hair out of her face. She lifted her head to see John smiling down at her.
"Good morning, love," He said in a hushed tone.
Thalia swiftly placed a kiss on John's lips. "Thank God you're okay," she exclaimed.
She rested her head on John's shoulder and put his arm around her. The two rested like that for a while.
"So," John started. "What was it that was bothering you last night?"
