Lake's POV
"Bro you should ask her to Junior Prom" my friend Will patted my shoulder with courage.
"I can't..." my heart starts to shatter.
My sister, Sadie, always tells me to move on. She's so awkward. She's so weird. Sadie tells me she doesn't like me and I should get over it.
"There's other fishes in the sea"
I don't want to catch other fishes. I want her. I hope she knew that and she accepted it. But the problem was I didn't know how to make a move.
I snapped out of my flashback like trance, and I was inputted the setting of high school life again. I was in soccer practice with Will, when he proposed the idea for me to ask her to Junior Prom.
"For Soccer, each player is required to go," he speaks quietly, not wanting coach to hear him, "and there's a special celebration/after party"
He was right. It was even worse than the pep rally, when I had to dance with Erin Mayfield, one of the biggest, ugly, sluts in the cheerleading squad. I wanted to dance with Bella instead.
The problem was I never asked a girl out-they were always on my clout for high prominence in the school. We were one of the top soccer high school teams in the nation, and we took Prom very seriously. Girls just wanted that recognition to be with me and a part of the soccer team festivities.
Most people overlooked me, and just saw the popularity and looks. I was more than a pretty boy. Bella saw that. She saw my personality and that I did more things than just kick a soccer ball.
But at the same time, Bella didn't really seem like she trusted me and opened up to me yet. I knew about her inner issues, but for me it was hard to understand. She was a beautiful, smart, sweet girl but it seemed like she was scared of herself.
"I'm taking Madeline Cross." Will tries to flex his social victories.
"You know she sent nudes to Declan, right? Just last week." I inform him.
Will starts to become disappointed. "Are you serious, you should've told me before!!"
I forgot to tell Will that information. Declan in gym class the other day showed me Madeline's nudes. I played it off like "cool bro," but I was actually disgusted.
"Whatever, Man" he tenses up his face, "I'm still taking her."
I was about to say another word, but Coach beat me to it.
"Huddle up, everyone!!"
We all crunch ourselves together in an oval like shape. Paying attention closely to Coach, because he was the person we looked up to.
"Last game is on Thursday," he explains, "we need this win in order to get #2 seed for regionals."
Everyone gets excited but nervous at the same time.
"That is why I gave you guys a 2 day rest from practice," he said, "however you guys still have to do your own workout."
"Thanks, Coach," we all said in unison.
He congratulates our good work and tells us we can leave. I grab my soccer bag and douse myself with some cologne. I try my best to style my hair without gel-but it was sweaty so I kept it. I walked over to my car.
Usually, I drove Bella home from her Art Club at school. Like always, she comes to my practice. But this week, she's been hella off. I was starting to wonder if I was the problem, so she had to avoid me. I still waited for Bella in my car, because I knew she needed a ride home and she hated walking.
A knock on my window scared me half to death. I look up and roll down the window to see Erin, ugh I hated her-she was an actual slut. She was like all typical high school cheerleaders-not like Bella though-Bella was unique and still beautiful.
"Lakeee," Erin cooed.
"What?" I said, trying to hold in my anger.
"Can you drive me, home?" Erin asked.
"No, I'm waiting for somebody," I said.
"Oh who? Bella?" she laughs cynically.
"She's in the gym crying, if you need her." She smirks.
I don't say a word to Erin. I lock my car and walk towards the school again, Erin decided to probably drive with Steve, an other guy I knew. Like I told you, she tries to use guys for money and lifts. But that wasn't the point.
I was walking through the dark hallways leading to the gym. It wasn't that scary though, because I was in here about 2 hours ago.
I finally get to the gym and hear a faint crying noise. When I walk towards the stage, I heard all contents of it and I could identify who it was. Bella.
"Hey bell," I laugh trying to lighten the mood.
But she starts to cry even more. I'm a fucking asshole.
"No no, I'm sorry," I start to apologize.
"Yooo—u d—id no—thing wro—ng," she says in between sobs.
"Then what are you crying about. Come on Bella. You have to tell me, you know I won't judge you."
She starts to sob even more.
"Fine," she says angrily.
I wait for her to get the strength to tell me what's going on. She knew inside, that I was here for her and always would be.
"Lake, I like you," she croaks, "And I've liked you since last year when you danced with me at the Winter Festival. I couldn't stop thinking about how sweet you are, cute obviously, and such a good soccer player. You are nice to everyone you know. I was deathly scared of telling you, because I knew I'm nothing compared to you. You are out of my league. Whatever call me a pussy and get with the rejection over with."
I start to smile and blush. I didn't think this would ever happen.
"Why are you smiling Lake?" her voice amplified.
"I was gonna ask you to Junior Prom," I said, "and later I was going to ask you out to be my girlfriend."
She looks dumbfounded. In all honesty, I would too.
"I'm so fucking sorry..."
"Hey," I move closer to her and bring her close, hugging/cuddling her small stature, "it doesn't mean we can't do all that stuff."
