•POV: Evie
My friends and I were enjoying ourselves at our village festival. We bought food and went to the certain booths-and it was funny because I got to see Cirie constantly get hit on by Shawn, who were both two of my best friends.
Cirie didn't really know it or notice it. She was oblivious to Shawn even liking her, which was really funny.
Dakota and I were in the middle of this situation. Dakota was one of my best friends who was gay, which I totally accepted him. In middle school, when he came out in 8th grade he was bullied. We went to a private Catholic school at the time, which in a private Catholic school even the teachers are not accepting. I stood up for him and supported him all the way through.
As we were walking in the festival, Cirie smiled at a little teddy bear in one of the "scam booths," I call them which is known as carnival games. You could never win those and if you did I would say because of pure luck.
Cirie tugged on Shawn. "That teddy bear is sooo cute!"
Shawn looks at the teddy bear and looks back at her. In a confident manner, he says, "I will win it for you."
Dakota and I cringe extremely. Shawn shoots both of us a glare and goes towards the game booth, to win Cirie the teddy bear. The game was basically cup pong, but the sign said you only needed to get 4 to win. It seemed like the cups were placed very far, that it was impossible to win.
A tall, blonde boy who was pasty white with the name tag "Krystian" is working the register . He sees Shawn and smiles.
"You know this isn't how you impress the girl," He smirks.
Cirie has a puzzled look on her face. Girl, if you don't get it now, I can't help you. The signs were so obvious.
Dakota adds his own humor to the conversation.
"No it's actually for me, because I am the cute girl," He makes a convincing pose and I laugh.
Shawn finally speaks.
"Not trying to impress her, she just wanted it, you know..." he drags a lie.
"Well, this is how we get money, from love struck idiots," he sighs while he puts Shawn's money in the register.
I giggle a little bit and he gives me a long stare. He finally breaks our stare with a smile. I keep it to myself while the others are distracted by Shawn's mating cry.
Shawn throws a couple of balls and makes conversation with the employee.
"Wait," Shawn pauses, "Aren't you in that band called "The Outcasts," you guys are playing today at the festival right?"
Krystian looks shocked. "How the hell do you know about that?"
Shawn laughs, "My mom is friends with a Mom who's kid is in that band."
"Who?"
"His name is Trent."
"My buddy," Krystian says, "He's the lead singer of our band."
Despite any awkward situation or conversation, Shawn always emanates friendliness.
"We will watch your gig." Shawn says while making it in the cup. It was his final cup that he needed to get for Cirie. Cirie smiles, because she knows what this means.
Krystian is shocked at Shawns' performance.
"Anyway, which one do you like?" He asks Shawn.
Shawn points up at the enormous teddy bear.
"I want that one."
Krystian gets a ladder and reaches for the bear. "Here you go,"
Krystian hands Shawn the bear. Shawn stays still and smiles while he gives Cirie the bear. Cirie is silent.
"You wanted it," He smiles.
Krystian looks over to me a little and glances at me. He touches his blonde hair before quickly looking away. Somebody my way must've caught his attention.
Dakota pokes me and whispers,
"Girllll! Krystian is into you!"
I don't say anything but shake my head back and forth to tell him no.
"Come on, I'll show you,"
Dakota goes up to Krystian and says,
"My friend Evie, over here, loves music."
Cirie is confused about Dakota's scheme. Shawn gets it wholeheartedly.
"Cirie and I are going to get ice cream. Dakota, do you want to come with?" Shawn innocently asks.
"Yeah sure," Dakota gives me a wink.
"Why can't I—"
Before I finish my sentence the three bolt, leaving me alone with Krystian. We were the only one at his game booth, at this time his booth wasn't busy right now.
"I'm sorry, I didn't catch your name really, is it Evie, like the Pokémon?"
I roll my eyes. "Yeah, like the Pokémon..."
"I didn't mean that to be offensive, I just..." He rambles his words, which says that he's very concerned about that I was really offended about that comment.
"No," I laugh, "If I was offended by you, then I would hate everyone."
"I mean it's such a unique name you know."
"Yeah."
I sit in silence, about to walk towards my friends. But then I stop my movement. My friends gave me this opportunity to talk to this really cute guy. If I left, I would be complaining about how no guys talk to me...but in reality I don't take advantage of the opportunity.
"So, are you an incoming college freshmen like me?" I ask.
"No," he hesitates, "I'm actually going to be a sophomore."
"Oh, awesome, where do you go?"
"U of I,"
"I wanna go there too!" I say.
"Really?" He looks surprised, "What are you majoring in?"
"Social work," I add, "I'm not the smartest so..."
"Don't say that," he chuckles, "I'm majoring in Engineering."
"Smartass," I cough.
